Clothes 101: Needs and Proper Care

If you are a first time parent, there are many needs that must be accomplished before your baby's arrival. One important, and fun job, is purchasing baby clothing. However, with such a large selection of baby clothes, you may be asking yourself which of these adorable little items are required.

Onesies

"Onesies" are basically baby t-shirts and are a necessary baby clothing purchase. To keep the onesie from creeping up and exposing your baby's belly, most onesies have snaps in the crotch. They can be worn alone or as an undergarment. Onesies, also known as rompers, come in basic white, colored or patterned varieties. For your basics, you should have between 5 to 10 onesies.

Sleepers

Sleepers are one-piece items with long legs and long or short sleeves. They usually have snaps down the legs for easy accessibility for late night diaper changes.

When preparing your basics, you should have between 5 to 8 baby sleepers. These are necessary as it is recommended that a newborn not sleep with thick blankets. This could inadvertently cause suffocation. The best material for both your baby's warmth and comfort are cotton or fleece sleepers.

Baby Socks

For your baby's requirements, you should purchase between 6 to 8 pairs of baby socks. Although socks are not required in warmer weather, they should be worn if taking your little one outside in chilly temperatures. They are also indispensable at night if your baby is wearing a sleeper without feet.

Baby socks are made of either thick or thin weaves. You should purchase a combination of both, as thin socks are better if your baby is to wear shoes.

Hats

Hats are baby clothing essentials for your little bundle. When taking care of your newborn, it is important to keep them adequately warm. Newborns often have difficulty regulating their body temperature and much of their heat escapes through their head.

It is recommended that your newborn wear a hat through his or her first month of life. After that, it is not as crucial unless you are taking them outside on a chilly or cold day. For this purpose, you should have 1 or 2 fairly snug, hats for your baby.

Proper Care for Baby Clothing

When caring for baby clothing, there are two schools of thought. The first is that your little bundle of joy's clothes should be washed in special detergents to alleviate the risk of skin allergies. There are a few varieties of mild laundry soaps that are scent and dye-free. Many of these detergents are aimed at the baby market, such as Dreft that boasts "A gentle clean. Just for baby".

The other school of thought does not believe that "gentle" laundry soaps are required for baby clothing. If your baby's skin does not react adversely to certain detergents, then a special detergent is not necessary.

Stain Removal

Your bundle of pink or blue will not think twice about staining their cutest outfits. Certain formulas, baby food and stains caused by leaking diapers are often difficult to remove from baby clothing. If pretreated before washing, some of the most stubborn stains can be eliminated, leaving the clothing both clean and in pristine condition. One tried and true stain remover is Oxi-Clean. You may want to "audition" or try different stain removers to find the one best suited for your laundry needs.

Wash New Clothes Before Wear

Before dressing your baby in new clothes, it is essential that you wash them first. Although baby clothing may look fresh and clean on department store hangers, many have come into contact with dirt, little four legged creatures and bugs during the shipping and packaging process.

Minor skin irritations may also result from sizing placed on many pieces of baby clothing. Sizing is used to keep items looking nice until they are purchased.

Getting prepared for your little one's new arrival is both a joyous and stressful time. Knowing what baby clothing is essential in your little one's layette and how to properly care for their clothing is one of the many tasks that lay before you. Knowledge is power and being prepared is half the battle.

5 Tips For A Successful Baptism Or Christening With Baptism Outfits And Rompers

Until around the 4th century, baptism was mostly performed on adults, but as time has passed this initiation into Christian life is now commonly performed on infants, with a naming ceremony included within the service. The birth of a new child into the family is always a cause for celebration and for many Christian families, this celebration includes a baptism or christening ceremony, where the family and the church officially welcome your child to the beginning of their Christian life. A christening or baptism can be a difficult thing to plan for many new parents with a range of factors to take into account. However, you will find your day runs smoothly and is enjoyed by all - even your little one - by following the few easy tips given below.

1. Don't forget the simple stuff-plan in advance

Perhaps the easiest way to make your child's christening or baptism as successful as possible is to ensure that all aspects of the day are as well thought-out as possible. The type of day you wish to have can determine a lot of other factors, including such things as the location of the event, choice of attire and nature of the ceremony itself. So remember that a little bit of advanced planning will lead to a better outcome!

2. Choose your location

Traditionally, baptisms and christenings are held within a church, and for many, holding the ceremony in a sanctified place is a significant and important aspect of the ceremony. Depending on the time of year however, it is also possible to hold the ceremony within your home or even in your garden. Holding the ceremony at home can often be a more intimate experience and you also have all the advantages of home to care for your child's comfort.

3. Choose your child's Godparents

Once you have chosen the location you will be able to discuss with your priest or pastor about the different requirements you have for the ceremony, and also inform them of who your child's godparents are. Asking a close friend or family member to act as your child's Godparent can be a very rewarding experience and an important responsibility (in most cases these will have been chosen in advance to the ceremony plans being made).

4. Choose your child's attire.

Your next decision will be about what your child will wear for their special day. Christenings or baptisms would traditionally see children wearing christening gowns because they are symbolic of the christening event. These christening gowns are usually white, in order to symbolize innocence and purity, and can be purchased in a wide range of materials such as cotton batiste, shantung, silk, and high quality polyester matte satin. Christening gowns can also come in more simplistic, modern designs which are appropriate for the occasion but can offer more comfort for your child. Or if a gown does not suit your taste, high quality romper suits are a great alternative! They are appropriate attire for christenings and baptisms (especially for boys) and can be purchased in a wide range of styles and finishes. These suits can be designed to include shirts and ties and smartly made lower sections to create the look of a small suit which is perfect for an occasion such as this.

5. Finally, consider the time of year

You may also need to think about the time of year in which the event will be held. The temperature of the day will help determine what kind of material will be best in terms of its thickness and also the sleeve length of the christening gowns or suit. To help keep your baby warm and also looking very smart you could purchase a small cardigan if you are looking to have short sleeves but are worried about your child becoming cold during the day. The quality of the is also important. This is an event where all eyes will be on your child, so it is important that he/she looks handsome. Purchasing beautifully made romper suits or christening gowns is one of the main ways to achieve this. By ensuring that the star of the day is comfortable, warm, and looking dashing, this special day is sure to run as smoothly as possible.

Decorating Ideas: Making Use Of Balloons

Having a baby is one of the most marvelous wonders of life, and one rite of passage for every new mother is to have an unforgettable baby shower to celebrate the upcoming birth of her child. A baby shower can provide an eventful opportunity for the mother to showcase the miracle of life through being pregnant and the elation of being a mother soon. Women just love to throw baby showers to pay tribute to the hardships of mothers during pregnancy and delivery. Baby shower decorating ideas usually have a general theme, with decorations such as balloons. However, these mere balloons can be used to make baby showers more appealing and fun.

Generally, colorful balloons can be made into wonderful decorations. There are assorted colors, sizes and styles of balloons that are filled with helium. There are also specialty balloons that are made of Mylar or foil, which usually comes with a variety of shapes and graphic designs. Balloons that will be used in baby showers can be in forms of feeding bottles, rattles, teddy bears, building blocks, and any other items related to infancy.

So, before choosing the balloons that will be incorporated into baby shower decorating ideas, decide on the theme and the color of the other items that will be used in the big day, such as plates, napkins and other party accessories. Once you have all those items, you can now choose the balloons that will complement with the theme of the party. Balloons can also be mixed used with streamers and laced on the ceiling, as well as they can be placed along with tables to add an eye candy.

Balloons can also be used on a lot of things, other than just being mere decorations. They can be used, for instance, in baby shower games. Try to use long and skinny balloons that look like sausages to have the guests of the baby shower try to figure out how many it will take to get around the belly of the pregnant mother when connected from end to end. You could also use balloons to make mothers remember how it feels like to be pregnant. Try to host a game where the guests stuff balloons under their shirts, appearing to be pregnant, and then race on the other side of the room without losing as much balloon as they can. Such games incorporated with balloons will surely entertain the guests and the soon-to-be mother alike.

Balloons can also make a striking statement about the baby shower by incorporating them with the gifts. If a stroller will be given to the mom-to-be as a gift, you could fill the stroller with balloons for an added nicety and surprise. For the more traditional gifts, you could attach helium-filled balloons to the ribbons to add more appeal on them.

If you think that balloons are only for interior decorations for baby showers, then think again. Balloons can also be incorporated on baby shower decorating ideas outside of the room. They can be used to decorate baby shower yard signs, which are inexpensive and easy to set up. The guests will surely love those balloons that will welcome them on the baby shower.

Creative Baby Shower Gifts Under $25

Creative baby shower gifts are aplenty and within budget. You don't have to break your bank just to get adorable little enchanted fairy tale carriage favor boxes to impress your friends who are going to be mommies soon. Read on for more creative ideas for baby shower gifts.

Getting Creative and Getting the Kudos

Shopping for creative baby shower gifts can be challenging, even to the most experienced moms and dads going to a baby shower or being given one. Why? They all experience that Jell-O in the arm feeling when faced with the daunting task of selecting that one gift that will bring on appreciative smiles. As parents, they want to give something both beautiful and practical, just like what they wanted when they got tons of baby gifts during the baby showers hosted for them.

Be creative. Shopping for baby gifts can be interesting. True, traditional baby shower gifts are appropriate for the occasion, but you can pull in a fast one by making these gifts truly creative, bearing your personal touch. How?

Traditional items like gift baskets can contain personalized bibs, booties, and even onesies. Hand-knitted blankets, picture frames, and piggy banks score a win when personalized, but what if you're broke and looking at $25? You can't welcome a special bundle of joy with a ho-hum gift that will gather dust or stay unused for years.

Lovely Baby Shower Gifts That Won't Cost You

Don't despair. There are baby shower gifts below $20 that won't have you losing face when the mom-to-be opens the colorful package. Here are some creative baby shower gifts you'll be happy to give:

* Beautiful and personalized cloths
* Gift sets with T-shirts, tank tops, pants, bib, cap and booties
* Charming keepsake boxes
* World's Greatest Mommy things (e.g. cheese grater)
* Personalized baby mugs
* Four-piece gift sets
* Personalized baby pacifiers
* Bottle holders
* Monogrammed diaper bags
* Tot's dish sets

Don't be afraid to give non-traditional or creative baby shower gifts below $20. Clue in to items for baby travel, feeding and bath items, and items for a sick baby, just in case. You'll also do well with breastfeeding support items for the mom such as breast pads and lanolin ointment.

Baby travel items make for creative baby shower gifts - rubber duckies, disposable wash cloths, infant toiletry, and some goodies for the mom. Don't forget to tuck in some pain relievers for both mom and dad; they'll need these while on the road. You may want to try out those sick baby items that include a baby thermometer. This will be greeted with sighs of relief because moms-to-be often forget these essential items.

The Mommy/Daddy Agenda

Don't get it wrong. Baby showers are also the time to pamper the moms-to-be. So if you are stumped with what to give for a baby who has yet to make an appearance, focus on the mom and dad. They'll lap up all the attention you'll shower on them with practical items like nifty bottle openers, key chains, votive candle holders, and scented bath oils.

Also, creative baby shower gifts do not mean you'll have to get stuck with so-so items that have been used to death, or the usual baby shower gifts that are beyond your budget. Baby shower gifts under $25 can save you sleepless nights. So get up and go creative. Spoil mom and dad and the baby, too.

Why would you consider putting your on canvas

The reasons for putting a photo on canvas are wide and varied.   Other methods for storing photos do indeed exist,  for example storing your photos on a hard disk or having them printed at a photography shop.

Photos used to be put onto forms of canvas through hand drawn methods, often using air brushing and other techniques to create an image.   These processes tended to take a very long time and so a new method of putting photos on canvas was needed.

Canvas artwork should last a lifetime

Technological advance in printers, ink and production methods in relation to photos on canvas art should mean that any canvas art print you would purchase should last a lifetime and you should look for a company that provides this guarantee with their products.  Because of traditional types of ink used in earlier era's it was found that colours tended to fade over time and depending on the type of media used the traditional inks soaked into the fabric and dulled its brightness.

Now transferring the same types of artwork through photos to canvas processing can ensure preservation of the artwork for a longer period of time. And for this reason modern artist use the method of photos to canvas art as an innovative way to mass produce their own artwork with the security of knowing their art will have a longer life span as photos on canvas art than its original painting form.

The cotton ingredients used for photos onto canvas artwork provides a surface that resembles that of traditional paintings, indeed this is one of the major attractions of having your photos printed on canvas, Your photos on canvas have a more authenticated look. The price of a canvas prints is also a fraction of the cost of a traditional painting as a form of artwork.

A unique piece of artwork

Putting photos on canvas has become increasingly popular for interior designers as any sort of image, whether it be of a child, a scenic landscape or even an animal can be converted into a piece of canvas art as a photo on canvas

In conclusion

Photos in a photo album are merely photos but photos to canvas are considered a form of fine artwork based on it brightness and conviction of the photo. This makes photos on canvas art an ideal gift for close friend or loves one that commemorates a memory as art. Not to mention once the photo has been stored digitally it can be produced as many times as needed plus photos to canvas artwork can be duplicated on any size media.

A New Use For That Favorite Photo : Custom Pillows

The modest accent of a pillow may be a welcome addition of home decor, but customize it with a photo into a Photo Pillow and see it become the new personal touch that completes your living room or bedroom.  Personalized Photo Pillows just might change the way you think about decorating, by letting you add not just an accent to a room, but a part of your history.

Of course, aside from looking beautiful, Photo Pillows just happen to be surprisingly comfortable to the touch.  You've likely not ever had a "decoration" that feels this nice.  This attribute comes from the proprietary fabric blend on which the photo is actually "baked".  Thanks to the unique printing process, Photo Pillows are fadeproof and scratchproof  (In fact, it just might outlast some prints!  When was the last time your pillow helped preserve a photo?).  Of course it's simple to wash your picture pillow.  The photo sham zippers on and will survive your laundering to live as long as the pillow insert itself - which means a very long time!

Once you've decided on a place in your home, a merchant, and a size of personalized photo pillow, the question remaining is what photo to get placed on it.  This is the most enjoyable part of any personalized decor.  You get to delve through those old photo albums - whether digital or in your closet.  Photo Pillows retailers can usually scan your pictures for a small or no fee.  any captured memory is an option, so have fun reminiscing!  Some ideas I can think of would be a family portrait or a family portrait, but don't allow the ideas stop there.  The photo possibilities are surprising (... for example, don't neglect the picture perfect photo of your family pet!).  Regardless of your choice of photo, with a Photo Pillow, you'll have a way of making a memory last a lifetime and own a special piece of home decor.

If you are a parent with a , you've probably experienced this scenario before. You feed your precious little one. You put her or him on your shoulder afterward for a nice little burp and you get the splat instead, especially if you have hardwood floors.

We've all been there. Babies spit up. It is just part of their natural being. Spitting up is a common occurrence, and about 40% of all babies spit up regularly. I know, two out of my three were regular spitter uppers, so I've handled more than my share of spit up over the years.

If you have a 4 month old, you might find that they spit up more often. If so, you'd be right, the peak age for babies to spit up is right around 4 months old.

Why Babies Spit Up

Babies are learning how to eat. Whether it's by the breast, or by the bottle, babies will take in air when they eat. That's why we put them on the shoulder after eating to get all of those annoying gas bubbles out of their systems. Sometimes a little extra in the form of liquid gets sent out with the air, and thus the spit up.

If you think your baby spits up too much, you might want to focus some attention on how they are eating. Here are a few ideas:

1) Feed your baby in a more upright position. This will help the food go down and make it easier for your baby to digest it.

2) If you are feeding with a bottle, make sure everything is the proper size. If you use the proper size, this can help to reduce the amount of air that goes in during feeding.

3) Check what your baby is eating. If your baby spit ups frequently a change in diet may help to reduce the problem.

4) How much you are feeding at one time can also be a factor. Some babies like to gulp it down, but if you can get them to eat at a more moderate and steady pace, you might see fewer spit ups.

5) Don't overfeed that child. I know this can be hard to do, especially with the first one when you don't really know how much they should be eating. A quick conversation with your Pediatrician can help you feel comfortable that your baby is eating enough, but not too much.

What to Do When Baby Spits Up

Since most babies spit up at one point in their early lives, it's a good idea to have a supply of burp cloths around. I cleaned up plenty of spit up and I can tell you that a good is an essential item any parent should have within arms reach. It is a really good idea to throw it over your shoulder before burping your little one.

The burp cloth is absolutely essential when Grandma, or Grandpa wants to do the feeding and or burping. Most have forgotten how you were as a baby and don't appreciate the spit up on the brand new dress or sweater.

Babies spit up, it's usually just a natural part of their learning to eat. So next time you get ready to feed and pat your baby, get the burp cloth and put it nearby, you'll be glad you did.

Your baby will probably spit up during her/his newborn life. It's okay. We've all been there. I have some additional advice for you on what to do when they spit up and what to use for your baby burp cloths. Visit http://www.babyburpcloths.net for great time saving ideas and tips.

Cloth Diapers- What are all the different types?

So what are cloth diapers?  Cloth diapers come in many shapes and forms now and it can become very confusing.    There are flat cloth diapers, prefolds, doublers, fitted cloth diapers, cloth diaper covers, all in one cloth diapers, pocket diapers, and Inserts.  Almost all of these diapering systems come in a variety of materials such as Hemp, Cotton, Fleece, Bamboo, and Wool.  It is no wonder why people reach for disposables as a first option, there is less variety.

Let us start with Flat Cloth Diapers.  Flat cloth diapers are simply a square or rectangular piece of material that you can fold to any size to fit around your newborn, baby or toddler.  They don't have any fasteners so either pins or diaper fastener can be used, or a diaper cover will help keep it in place.  Flat cloth diapers can be the most cumbersome of cloth diaper types but they are the most economical because they can be used with any age of your child and can continue to be used while potty training at night.  These are great to have in your diaper bags because they can also be used as inserts, wipes, burp pads, change pads and any time you may need a cloth around.

Flat Cloth diapers can come in different materials and all will have various degrees of absorption.  Keep in mind that cotton flannel flat cloth diapers are found in most department stores but are not the most absorbent so you will need to purchase more as you will be changing them more frequently.  I did have these initially for my son but found them difficult to fold properly as he grew.  Also as he got stronger it was harder to get everything in place before he'd turn or move.    So I bought prefolds next.

Prefolded cloth diapers or Prefolds are a rectangular piece of material that has several layers to it and it is sewn together.  Usually the middle section will have an absorbent insert also sewn into place.   At Little P Baby Store we carry Organic cotton pre-fold by Bummis.  They are a 4x8x4 ply which is a high-quality, absorbent prefold, which means the outer layers have 4 layers of and the middle panel has 8 layers of .  Prefolds are easier to use than the flat cloth diapers mainly because you can easily fit them around your baby for a snug fit.  Keep in mind, like the Flat cloth diapers, they are best used with a cloth diaper cover.  They can also be fastened with pins or diaper fasteners.  Regardless of the name of the prefold, Chinese prefolds, Indian prefolds, or others, they all have the same idea but remember the uniqueness is in the materials that are used and that relates to the absorbency.  We carry the highest-quality absorbent prefolds that are unbleached as bleaching can damage the fibers.  Also remember that these require a cloth diaper cover.

Fitted cloth diapers are named because they are meant to fit around your baby or toddler and don't require any folding.  One of the benefits of fitted cloth diapers is their ease of use.  They will come with either snaps or Velcro for a fast and easy diaper change.  Most brands will have elastic around the legs and waist to contain any mess.  For most parents fitted cloth diapers are the easiest to use but they do still require a separate diaper cover.  They provide a great fit for your child at that age, but you will need to buy different sizes as your child grows.  There is a small variety at one size fits all options for fitted cloth diapers.  At Little P Baby Store we carry 4 brands of fitted cloth diapers such as Bambineo Bamboo, Bamboozle Bamboo, Bamboo Baby and Baby Milano fitted cloth diaper.  Bamboo is a naturally antibacterial and anti-allergic product that is easily cultivated and thrives without the use of fertilizers or pesticides. It does not drain the soil's nutrients and does not require monoculture farming.  It is gorgeously soft, has healing properties and is 70 to 80% more absorbent than cotton.

The next type of cloth diaper is the pocket cloth diaper, such as the BumGenius 3.0.  This diapering type comes with an inside pocket that you can insert padding, has a waterproof outer layer and closures.  They are extremely easy to use.  Some times these are mistake for all-in-one diapers but they are close in structure.  With the pocket diaper you insert a padded material into the pocket and then place them on your baby.  The diaper cover itself is sewn to the inner fleece layer so that when your baby urinates the moisture is pulled into the absorbed insert and away from your baby.   These are becoming extremely popular due to the capabilities of keeping moisture away from the baby, unlike the first few listed types of cloth diapers.  Remember to purchase your inserts when looking at pocket cloth diapers and the same rule applies the different materials for inserts will relate to the absorbency so try to choose inserts that are layered if cotton or more absorbent types like Bamboo or Terry cloth.

So the final type of cloth diapers is the All-in-one (AIO) diaper.  They are exactly what you would expect, they have it all; inner absorbent core, waterproof cover, front closure, snug fit around the legs and waist.  No need to folding, pinning, stuffing or wrapping.  These diapers are more expensive because they are all combined in one but they are still cheaper than disposables.  We have a few different varieties to choose from; Indisposables, Bamboo Baby All-in-one, and Snug to Fit by Dri-Line.

Cloth diaper covers are unique in that they can be reused a few times before needing to be washed, if they are not soiled or have a smell.  Cloth diaper covers can come with Velcro or snap closures, such as Baby Milano cloth diaper covers, Bummis Super Brite or Bummis Super Whisper wrap.  These covers can come in different fabrics such as Vinyl (PVC), Polyurethane Laminate (PUL), and Nylon.  Vinyl is no longer recommended as it will not hold up to washing and they can leak into your child's skin. PUL is a laminate that is applied over either polyester or cotton to make the cover waterproof.  They are machine washable and can be dried.  They will withstand the test of time and can be used for many years.  Nylon cloth diapers are similar to PUL but should not go in the drier.  Both of these are a much better alternative to Vinyl due to its breathable and softer qualities.

I hope this was able to answer some questions about the different types of cloth diapering systems.  Next part of the series will cover "HOW DO I CHOOSE?"

The Old School Crochet Style

Have you ever wondered where and when this needlework hobby started? According to the September 1997 newsletter of the Crochet Guild of America, a researcher theorized that the art of crochet could be traced as far back as 1500s in Italy. However, there is no solid evidence for this statement.

But even so, we can only imagine that this craft has been around for the longest time. And it has evolved from making only home décor works to stitching clothes and other fashion accessories as well.

Reminiscing Crocheting can let you do a lot of things. From small purses to jackets and sweaters, there are a lot of options to choose from. But there are probably some hobbyists that are looking for those old, classic that can usually be seen during the early 1900s or even earlier. To help you in finding those hard-to-look for , here are some resources that you can check out in the World Wide Web.

- Vintage Crochet Patterns. Tabitha Gibbons, the owner of this web site, offers several volumes of crochet patterns books. She sells a wide selection of vintage crochet patterns, from little doilies, rugs, afghans to bed covers and table cloths. By visiting her web site, one can fill out the name and email form to receive a free pattern book.

- Crochet Treasures. "Patterns from the past; Creating heirlooms for tomorrow..." This is the slogan of this web site with a collection of classic patterns. It is a member-based site that offers over 950 vintage patterns to its subscribers. For visitors, it also offers about 25 free vintage crochet patterns for personal use. However, it is not accepting new members at the moment until further notice by the owner.

- Celt's Vintage Crochet. Yet another vintage crochet patterns site, this really has a wide variety of vintage patterns to choose from. And the best thing about this site is that all of these patterns are for free! It also showcases the owner's finished projects, most of which are doilies and other table accessories.

- Soft Memories. This site brings you back to the past with its collection of more than a thousand vintage crochet patterns. The patterns are grouped in different categories - doilies, bed jackets and slippers, hanky edgings, potholders, ruffles and flowers, doll clothes, and other home décor pieces. All of these patterns can be viewed and printed out by subscribing to the site. There are also a few free patterns available for visitors to get a peak of what the site has to offer.

- Vintage Crochet Patterns e-book. This sort-of e-book contains 20 wonderful vintage patterns that are easy to crochet and can be hits in fairs and bazaars. Some examples of the patterns available are the crochet work bag, beaded doily, and the wedding ring bedspread. This is a portable document file (pdf) that can be downloaded for free from Crochet and Knitting web site.

- 1800's to Early 1900's Vintage Pattern Links. This site, authored by a lady named Martha who is also known as StarGazer, has several links to patterns that were designed way back 1800s up to 1930s. These patterns can be accessed for free. The site also has links to other web sites that offer vintage crochet patterns.

- Antique Crochet Patterns. This section in the web site Knitting-Crochet has almost a hundred of vintage patterns categorized into pieces, men's or ladies' wear, slippers, tablecloth, doily, and many others. It also offers to convert your knitting patterns to crochet and vice versa. Best of all, these patterns are free to access and print for personal use!

- Antique Crochet Patterns. This one is different from the site above as this is the web site name itself, not just a section. This site offers vintage crochet patterns from 1850s to 1950s and all of these are baby items such as bonnet, booties, hat, jumper, afghan, and a lot more. It also provides free lesson for the wannabes and beginners of this needlecraft.

These are just a few of the tons of resources you can find online that offers hard-to-find vintage patterns. Whether free or fee-based, these sites and resources can surely take you back in time with the wonderful, classical patterns that they offer.

Irish Wedding Traditions

There is one wedding Irish tradition that states: 'Marry in May and Rue the Day' while another states: 'Marry in April if you can, joy for maiden and for man'.

When I told my daughter about this Irish superstition, she changed her wedding date so that she'd be married in April!

What began as a search for Irish traditions and customs that she could incorporate into her celebration ended up as an incredible pile of notes that eventually took on a life of its own. Long after her wedding, I was still obsessed with delving into history and folklore, looking for everything I could find on how weddings were celebrated in Ireland long ago.

I am convinced that if couples make the effort, they can have a totally Irish celebration from beginning to end - even to the pre-wedding parties. There's one quaint custom where the groom was invited to the bride's house right before the wedding and they cooked a goose in his honor.

It was called Aitin' the gander - it has to be where we get the expression 'his goose is cooked!' We threw one of these dinner parties for my daughter and everyone had a great time. (The apple-potato stuffing has become a family favorite!).

There are so many other traditions, customs and just an incredible amount of folklore to draw upon, that it would be remiss to be of Irish descent and not take advantage of all the possibilities.

Here are just a few ideas culled from what eventually has become a 200-plus page book called 'The Traditional Irish Wedding' and it is now available in the United States and will be released in Ireland this spring. As complete as I could make it, the book covers attire, decor, menus, recipes, music, toasts, vows, and perhaps of most value, a resource listing that will help you find everything from Irish wedding gowns and tiaras to sheet music for a Celtic Mass.

Here are some more:

* Bunratty Meade is a honey wine that's served at the Bunratty Castle medieval banquet. It's from a recipe based on the oldest drink in Ireland and if you've never tasted it, it's well worth trying. In the old days, it was consumed at weddings because it was thought that it promoted virility. (If a baby was born nine months after the wedding, it was attributed to the mead!) Couples also drank it from special goblets for a full month following the wedding, which is supposedly where we get the word honeymoon. This was to protect the couple from the fairies coming to spirit the bride away.

* Lucky horseshoe. Irish brides used to carry a real horseshoe for good luck. (Turned up so the luck won't run out). You can get porcelain horseshoes which most Irish brides carry these days, or one made of which is worn on the wrist.

* Magic Hanky. This charming custom involves having the bride carry a special hanky that with a few stitches can be turned into a christening bonnet for the first baby. With a couple of snips it can be turned back into a hanky that your child can carry on his/her wedding day.

* Make-up bells. The chime of bells is thought to keep evil spirits away, restore harmony if a couple is fighting, and also remind a couple of their wedding vows. Giving a bell as a gift has become an Irish tradition. You could also have your greeters hand out tiny bells to your guests to ring as you process. (You might want to let them know when they're supposed to be rung - perhaps mention it in your program along with an explanation of the custom). Guests could also ring their little bells at the reception in lieu of clinking glasses.

* Irish Dancers. Consider hiring a group of Irish dancers to hand out your programs before the ceremony. Dressed in their full regalia, it would add a wonderful touch of pageantry and color. They could also dance at the reception later. We did this at my daughter's reception and it was a major hit.

* Music. There's so much wonderful Irish music available, you'll have no problems in finding appropriate selections for both the ceremony and the reception. The difficulty will be in deciding which pieces to play!

* Readings: My daughter had the following Irish wedding vow on the front of her program:

By the power that Christ brought from heaven, mayst thou love me. As the sun follows its course, mayst thou follow me. As light to the eye, as bread to the hungry, as joy to the heart, may thy presence be with me, oh one that I love, 'til death comes to part us asunder.

On the back of the program, she had this old Irish proverb: Don't walk in front of me, I may not follow. Don't walk behind me, I may not lead. Walk beside me and just be my friend.

* The Irish Wedding Song. Very popular at contemporary Irish weddings. We had two friends sing this at my daughter's reception while the newlyweds cut the cake. (Afterwards I thought we should have had the lyrics typed up and placed on the tables so that everyone could join in).

* Flowers. In the old days, many Irish brides wore a wreath of wildflowers in their hair; they also carried them in bouquets. For my daughter's wedding, our florist designed gorgeous bouquets that included a flower called Bells of Ireland. In Wales, brides carried live myrtle and gave a sprig to each bridesmaid which they planted. If it grew, the bridesmaid would marry within the year. If you're planning a more general Celtic celebration, this might be worth considering.

* Ancient custom: In the old days, couples ate salt and oatmeal at the beginning of their reception: Each of them took three mouthfuls as a protection against the power of the evil eye. Also, when a couple is dancing, the bride can't take both feet off the floor because the fairies will get the upper hand. Fairies love beautiful things and one of their favorites is a bride. There's many an Irish legend about brides being spirited away by the little people! For the same reason, it's bad luck for a bride to wear green. I've also heard that it's bad luck for anyone to wear green at an Irish wedding - but I think it really only applies to the bride. It's also bad luck for a bride or the groom to sing at their own wedding.

Portents and omens:

* A fine day meant good luck, especially if the sun shone on the bride. If you're a Roman Catholic, one way to make certain that it won't rain is to put a statue of the Infant of Prague outside the church before your ceremony.

* It was unlucky to marry on a Saturday.

* Those who married in harvest would spend all their lives gathering

* A man should always be the first to wish joy to the bride, never a woman

*It was lucky to hear a cuckoo on the wedding morning, or to see three magpies

* To meet a funeral on the road meant bad luck and if there was a funeral procession planned for that day, the wedding party always took a different road

* The wedding party should always take the longest road home from the church

* It was bad luck if a glass or cup were broken on the wedding day

*A bride and groom should never wash their hands in the same sink at the same time-it's courting disaster if they do

* It was said to be lucky if you married during a 'growing moon and a flowing tide'

* When leaving the church, someone must throw an old shoe over the bride's head so she will have good luck

* If the bride's mother-in-law breaks a piece of wedding cake on the bride's head as she enters the house after the ceremony, they will be friends for life.

Many other customs are interspersed throughout the book, e.g. (from the reception section) the top tier of your wedding cake should be an Irish whiskey cake which is saved for the christening of your first baby. I've also heard of another custom which just came to my attention and will be included in the next edition: a bottle of champagne is saved from the reception so that it can be used to 'wet the baby's head' at the christening.

In finally making this book a reality, my hope is that when he says to you 'would you like to be buried with my people', or you say to him 'would you like to hang your washing next to mine', you'll say yes, and then use the suggestions to help you plan an Irish celebration reflective of your roots and as romantic as your heritage.

And for all engaged couples and their families in the midst of pre-wedding chaos, I raise a parting glass: May all your joys be pure joy and all your pain champagne.
