Entering photography for Fun and Prizes

Are You:
* A professional photographer?
* An amateur photography enthusiast?
* Someone with a camera and a creative mind?

Yes, contests are for just about anyone. Unlike poetry or cooking contests (where there's a definite level of skill involved) almost anyone can start taking pictures with a camera. Digital cameras are getting better and better and many people can take great photographs with little training.

Why Enter ?
The prizes range from small cash prizes to major prizes that include professional photography equipment, photo software (PhotoShop sells for over $600) and several of the larger photo contests give away HUGE travel prizes. Apart from winning prizes, you also get a chance to develop your own real-world portfolio and depending on the , a win (or even a good finish!) can help launch your photo career.

You will:
* Showcase your photography skills
* Be judged by experts and critics (even peers) in your field
* Win amazing prize packages
* Get published on-line or in some of the most prestigious photo magazines in the world.

How To Get Started:
There are three basic divisions of photo contests. The first level is appropriate for amateurs who just want to have fun. They are judged on the content of the photo vs. the skill of the photographer. The second level is appropriate to amateur photographers at the begging and intermediate skill levels who are learning to take good . The third level is for intermediate to advanced amateurs and professional photographers who want to build a portfolio and maybe win equipment or prizes to advance their careers.

If you are a rank amateur who just wants to have fun, there are loads of what I call "anything goes" contests. baby photo contests, cute pet contests and many contests run by product companies or websites. The photos are judged based on the content rather than the content plus skill level.

If you are a beginning or intermediate level amateur photographer you will probably want to start with the smaller, on-going contests. On-going contests normally have regular weekly or monthly themes and deadlines. These contests are free or cheap to enter and their prizes are small or involve "just the glory of being a winner." What you will get is good feedback from fellow photographers, allowing you to grow your skill levels in a friendly environment. Your peers often judge your photos, so you can see what kind of impact your photos make on your viewers.

As your skill levels increase, start looking for contests sponsored by the camera and software companies and by the photography magazines. Some of these are very inexpensive to enter, such as PhotoLife Magazine's bi-monthly reader contest. Others are huge, international contests, with hefty fees and giant prize packages. These are the contests that can create a very solid photography career for you!

Here are a few things to watch for:
* Make sure that you read the terms & conditions of participating in each contest. There are some contests in which you forfeit your copyright to your photo / work just by registering in the contest. What's the point of showcasing your work if you legally sign it over to someone else? So make sure you read the terms.
* Follow the instructions. This cannot be over-emphasized.
* Enter in the best category for your photos. (scenic beauty, human form, travel photos, etc.)
* Read the fine print. Many contest organizations won't return your entry, so don't send them original material.
* Many contests place a limit to the number of entries you can submit, you will get disqualified if you send more.
* Read the definition of amateur or professional to be sure you qualify.

Entering photography contests can be a very rewarding hobby that can pay off big time. Challenge yourself to get out every week and learn something new about using your camera and some new concept or technique to improve your work. Then enter, enter, enter ... until you WIN!

In 1933, a squint-eyed sailor with outsized forearms danced a hula with Betty Boop--and began one of the great series in American cartoon history. Popeye had made his debut in Elzie Segar's comic strip "Thimble Theater" four years earlier, and the jump to animation only increased his popularity: by 1938, he rivaled Mickey Mouse. During the '30s, when Disney was creating lushly colored, realistic ...

Dog Photo Contests

dog photo contests

You want to plan and throw a party that becomes L-E-G-E-N-D-A-R-Y but you’re not sure how to do that? It’s simple using the three principles of legendary parties!

1)    Extreme Theme - pick a party theme and take it to the extreme!
2)    Engaging Entertainment - include crazy, fun entertainment that gets your guests involved!
3)    Paparazzi - create pictures to remember!

1)    Extreme Theme
Your theme doesn’t have to be original but the more specific theme you have, the better. It will help you focus your energy and your guest will know exactly what to expect. Wanna have a pool party? Make it a 70’s Disco Pool Party. Wanna have a birthday party? Make it a Double-Dog-Dare Birthday Party. Having trouble thinking of a theme? You can enhance any theme by adding a period of time. Be specific here - 80’s isn’t specific enough, make it 80’s Hip Hop or 80’s Glam Rock.

Once you’ve selected your theme, take it to the extreme! Start by creating an atmosphere of fun around your specific theme.  If you’re throwing a 70’s Disco Pool Party, have disco balls up everywhere, have disco music playing, have wigs for your guests to put on to help them get in the mood. Better yet, ask them all to wear 70’s disco gear to your party. Decorations and music really set the mood.

Add to the atmosphere with creative food and drinks that also tie into your theme. For your 70’s Disco Pool Party, have a ‘Stayin’ Alive’ cocktail (mix equal parts Redbull and flavored vodka), Macho Men burgers, and Disco Inferno Poppers (jalapeno poppers). Creatively naming food you love is an easy way to make food match your theme.

2)    Engaging Entertainment
Get your guests involved with several zany activities! The idea here is to have people involved and doing things that are fun and different than what they normally do. And of course, all your activities should match your theme.  If you’re throwing a Double-Dog-Dare Birthday Party, invite your guests to bring their dogs and see whose dog can do the most tricks. More ideas include having an old-fashioned Double-Dog-Dare Truth or Dare game! You could also have a hot dog eating and even gave a pass the footlong hotdog without using your hands game.

Also remember that kid’s games are not only for kids, so think about the games you loved as a child and resurrect them for your party. Red Rover anyone?

3)    Paparazzi Photos
Last, but certainly not least, take some paparazzi-worthy photos! If you have your guests dress up, that’s usually enough. If you don’t, create a place or way to make memories that your friends will want to show their friends. For your Double-Dog-Dare Birthday Party, have a big hot dog costume that people can get into for photos. Or have hot dog hats or necklaces. You can also make your own hot dog stand and cut out a place for people’s faces.  The ideas are limitless once you have a specific theme.

By using your imagination and applying the three principles of a legendary party, your party will be a huge success! All your friends will wonder how you did it and you alone will know the secrets. Happy party planning!

Free Baby Photo Contests

If you are a small business owner who is serious about boosting your income, listen up! Your profile picture matters.

I have seen thousands of profile pictures including those that are silly, indecent, weird and just plain unprofessional.

Obviously, if you are utilizing free-marketing strategies, you're going to tap into social media marketing. And ALL of these sites allow you to upload your picture.

Remember, marketing is all about transparency, visibility and connectiveness. That is, people want to get to know the person "behind the company."

When people come to your page on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, what is the very first thing that they look at? Your picture of course!

Now, obviously it's not a beauty . As of right now, there aren't any prizes for the "Best-Looking Facebook Profile Picture." So, please don't start down the path of "I'm too fat, too ugly, too old..." There are some "great-looking" marketers and some rather "unexceptional-looking" marketers out there. It's not their beauty that scores them points. But, what all good marketers have in common is that they do put up a professional profile picture to better relate with their audience.

Here are the Top Ten Profile Picture Disasters (that I have personally witnessed):

1. "Trying To Be Sexy." You absolutely must cover yourself up. There is nothing less professional than a scantily clothed business-person. (Except, for #5)

2. "Blurred" or "Too Dark." If it's not a clear picture, don't use it.

3. "Your Child." If you use your child as your profile picture, there will be many misconceptions. Believe it or not, people will actually think that your child is YOU and immediately exit your page. So, keep your children in your albums where they belong.

4. "Your Dog." Those who know me, know that I am absolutely crazy about my little Chihuahua. But, as adorable as she is, I do not use her as my profile picture.

5. "Chugging A Beer." Enough said.

6. "Sideways or Upside-Down." If you upload your picture and it ends up sideways, you NEED to fix it. We don't want to have to do acrobats to be able to see you.

7. "Too Faraway." It is never fun to try and make out someone who is 1/16th of an inch big. We should never have to get out a magnifying glass to see you.

8. "Way Too Serious." I truly believe that individuals should smile in their profile picture. In addition, there was a research study conducted on Twitter that suggested that people who smile gain 28% more followers. Who wants to do business with Debbie-Downer? So put on a smile, it's really not that bad.

9. "Trying To Be Goofy For No Reason At All." Until you have truly created your brand, don't go for the goofy hats, clothes and antics. It really does send out the wrong message.

10. "No Picture At All." This is the worst offense of all. Please put up a profile picture if you are using social media sites. People want to see you. And I have heard time and time again that people oftentimes won't connect with people without pictures. Social media is "social." So, show us who you are.

If one of the above disasters describes your picture, then you have a decision to make. You can simply keep your profile picture "as is," or you can take the time to upload a picture that represents you as a true professional.

Like it or not, your profile picture speaks volumes about you. So, do your best to use a picture that you want the world to see.
