Decorating With photography

One of the easiest ways to enhance either a home or an office is with pictures - the difference a single framed painting can make to a bare wall can be huge. However, even more different is decorating a wall with , especially personal , which can add something completely unique to any room. However, there are certain things you should take into consideration first, to enable the best effect.

The first thing you'll want to consider is whether to have the photograph in black or white. This can be decided by many factors - for instance, in a modern bachelor apartment, a classy black and white photograph will look a lot better than a colorful montage. The same goes for a boardroom or office - staff or corporate photographs will usually look better in color than a black and white print.

However, if you have a really good color photograph and you wish it were black and white (or vice versa), there are ways to achieve this. If the photograph has been taken via a digital camera, you can then upload it to a computer and use a program like Photoshop or similar to edit it. This can give you a myriad of effects - from straight color swap to adding a tinge of sepia to give an air of aging, the possibilities are endless. Even if you've used a traditional stills camera, you can ask for a CD when developing them that the negatives will be transferred to, so you can still upload them to a computer and amend with a photo editing software program.

Depending on what look you wish to go for in whatever room you're putting the photograph(s) in, the frame is the next choice to make. If you wish, you can purchase different frames for different walls in the same room. Far from them not looking right, the different approach will allow them to be more prominent. Look to match them to your surroundings, if you wish, so that frame blends in with carpet, or rug, or sofa.

The next thing you may wish to consider is whether you want to hang a single picture, or a group together. This is fairly easy to decide - a single photograph picture frame will usually look out of place the larger the wall, so let that dictate your approach. Groups of frames offer a warmer sense of being, especially if it's and family. Have a collage of school from different ages as the central theme, and perhaps miscellaneous family photographs surrounding them to finish an inviting look.

The last thing you really need to decide is whether you wish to use your own photographs, or professional ones from an art shop. This is really down to how much quality you wish to involve. Although obviously not up to the standard of a professional photographer, your own photographs can be of a more than presentable quality, if you're prepared to take the time to get the right shots. However, by mixing photographs from a studio with your own, you can achieve an excellent effect and add that little bit of difference to any room.

Starting a photography Business - A Seven Part Series - Step One

Introduction

This is one of a seven part series originally published as "The Seven Steps You Can Take RIGHT NOW To Get Your High School Senior Business Off The Ground" If you'd like to receive the report in its entirety visit the links in the author bio at the bottom.

Get started the right way with: Step #1 - Goals and an Action Plan

If you would accomplish anything of significance in life you MUST have a goal and you MUST have an action plan. The actual "act" of writing down your goals and creating your action plan being the most crucial step.

Each person reading this article will be at a different place in their life with respect to skills and business growth. You may already have an established portrait business and be looking to develop the senior portrait part of your business. Or you may be at ground zero, camera in one hand, desire in the other.

My goal for you, upon completion of the steps in this report, is that you are ready to photograph a high school senior and get paid for it. You'll still have challenges and hurdles to overcome in the creation of your business, but you'll have made that all important start.

Probably you're currently working some other job and may continue to do so for some time. (All the more reason to set goals and create that action plan.) Set aside a certain amount of time each day to work on your business. I find it's best to make it the same time each day. Then your spouse, your significant other, your kids and your dog all know that i.e. from 9:00 pm to 10:30 pm you are not to be disturbed.

The Importance of Goals

Do you ever wonder why some people always seem to rise to the top - no matter what they do? Perhaps you're personally acquainted with someone like this. You know for a fact they're no smarter than you and they certainly aren't better looking! But they always get the raise or the promotion. They enjoy better vacations and they drive a nicer car. What gives?

Do You Have a Plan?

In the "7 Steps" report I mention a man by the name of Jim Rohn. Mr. Rohn passed away in December of 2009 and believe me, it was a significant loss in the world of personal development. I was fortunate to have been exposed to Mr. Rohn when I was in my 20's and his voice still rings clear in my memory. "If you don't have a plan for your life chances are you'll always fit into someone else's plan. And guess what, you may not like what they have planned for you."

Don't Just Let Life Happen to You

In my life I have been a meat cutter in a grocery store butcher shop, I sold real estate and became a designated and licensed residential real estate appraiser; later starting and running my own real estate appraisal firm. I have presented to small groups on time management and motivation. I started my portrait studio in 1994, built it to one of the most successful senior portrait studios in southern Minnesota, added baby portraiture, family portraiture and then team portraiture.

Throughout my working life I've enjoyed great successes and suffered significant failures. I was exposed to the "art" of setting goals and creating action plans while in my 20's during a short experience as an Amway distributor. There is no question my greatest advancements came when I was actively involved in setting goals and creating daily action plans. The human psyche is a strange thing. If I know I do my best and achieve the most when I'm setting goals and creating action plans, why don't I continue to do it every single day of my life? I'd have a considerably larger bank balance if I knew the answer to that one.

We Are All Alike

I'm fairly certain you've been exposed to some kind of goal setting in your past and I have no idea your level of success. My guess is if you're reading this, there is still more in your life you want to achieve. Dreams as yet unreached. I believe you can achieve whatever you put your mind to. I don't even know you and I firmly believe that - because you're human.

What Do You Believe - About You?

I make the next statement at risk of your immediately hitting the delete key sending this article to the virtual garbage can. But then I like to live on the edge; so here goes. I'm a Christian and I believe in God.

Still here? Good. I believe you can accomplish whatever you set your mind to because we are all created in God's image. BUT - even if you don't believe in God, and that's fine - this is about pictures not religion. Even if you don't believe in God, is there any reason NOT to believe something as complex and intelligent as a human being can accomplish anything it truly wants to?

Our Beliefs Carry Us Forward - Our Beliefs Hold Us Back

The person we are today is the sum total of all of our experiences to date. Everything that's ever happened to us, every experience we've had, has somehow, in some way, affected and molded the person we've become, the person we are right now.

Over the years we've developed beliefs in our abilities and in-abilities. If we didn't do well in math as a young student we grew to believe we'd always have trouble with numbers and very likely today we suck at math. If we played basketball as a kid but were never very good, it's likely we migrated towards something else we were good at. "Nah, I don't really like basketball." I wonder why.

Figure Out Why and Then Get to It

If you go way back to the beginning on the Portrait Expert blog you'll find a post titled, "How Big Is Your Why?" What makes you get up in the morning and what keeps you awake at night. What do you want more than anything else in the world - Napoleon Hill calls it "developing a white-hot desire".

Photography is a wonderfully exciting, artistically satisfying business - but it ain't gonna trip your trigger every day of the week. It won't be long and you're bound to have a day filled with snotty brat, inconsiderate, ill-mannered, temperamental teenagers. You'll drag your weary body home, fall into your chair and wonder what could have possibly possessed you to want to start a portrait business. That's where your all important "why" comes in.

You can do this.

Which softbox kit is best for me ? 300 w or 600w?

I am in college for photography, and have yet to go into the studio lighting couse, however I had wanted to set up a studio in my home in the meantime and wanted to purchase a softbox kit. There are two that I was interested in and wondered whether or not 300 watt per seconds is enough for infant/childrens portraits or if I would need a flash that is 600 watts per second ?

Also I am unsure of how to wirelessly trigger the flash. My camera does not have flash built in flash, and from what I understand from other photographers describing how their softbox flash is set off, they use a trigger in the camera but the flash from the on camera flash also triggers the off camea flash ... Would I need to have my shue mounted flash put on as well as a wireless trigger to make the flash go off .. Or if I had a trigger on my camera would it just make the flash go off when I pressed the shutter button to take the picture ???? What kind of wireless trigger is best, a pocketwizard ?

You didn't say what strobes you are looking at here so I will keep this somewhat general in answer. (Alien Bees and Impact are my own favorites)

The 600wps will allow you to adjust downward, also consider that your softbox will diffuse the light to a degree as well. That said, I would go for the 600wps set. Also, look into a shoot through umbrella... I think you'll like it.

As for firing. There are a number of different options. Most decent strobes will fire IR. You can trigger them remotely with your flash or by a wireless unit. Other options are to cable them to your camera (a pain, but effective) If you choose to fire them via a hotshoe mounted flash, look into a grip so that your flash is off to the side and you may want to consider a diffuser for your flash.

Happy shooting

Simply beautiful baby and child

Photographs are an integral part of our daily lives, from sensationalist images in tabloid papers, to personal family snapshots, to the art photography displayed in galleries and sold through international art markets. In this thought-provoking exploration of the subject, Steve Edwards provides a clear, lively, and imaginative approach to the definition, importance, and meaning of photography. He combines a sense of its historical development with an analysis of its purpose and meaning within a wider cultural context. Edwards also discusses both well-known and more unusual , from the highly controversial Cottingley Fairies to Ansel Adams landscapes, and from the shocking and influential Eddie Adams image of a Vietcong suspect being executed to the portrait/performance art work of Cindy Sherman. Edwards interrogates the way we look and think about photographs, and considers such issues as truth and recording, objectivity and fine art, identity and memory.

CS3, CS4 or Lightroom?

Just wondering what is the best deal for professional grade photo editing software? I had CS3, but lost it (looooooooooooooong story), I'm a photographer and I'm looking to replace. Really don't want to spend $700 on CS4 and I can't find any trustworth sellers who carry CS3. What is Lightroom like? Can you use it to do the same things you can with photoshop? Or what about this new Photoshop elements program? Which would you reccommend. I do mostly childrens and highschool senior pics but would like to expand. Thanks for the help!
Can you use Lightroom to edit like CS3?

Light room is great for fast, everyday adjustments of .
It is intuitive, easy and quick. It can do many of the typical functions you need for improving the look of a photo.

Photoshop can do all that, too, and much more.... a lot of stuff that Lightroom can NOT do. However, it isn't as quick and easy of a workflow.

Having both is ideal, if you can only afford one, it depends how much you want to do..... I could never make do with only LR.

Download the trial so you'll understand exactly what it can and can't do.

Elements is a great piece of software, but being used to CS4, Elements frustrates me terribly, because there are a number of things it can't do.

Check out the Adobe website's "what's new" section to find the difference between CS3 and CS4.
