Impacts of Television on

IMPACTS OF TELEVISION ON CHILDREN

Television has become a significant social phenomenon in Pakistan. There is no doubt that television has a great influence on children from a very early age itself and it will affect children’s cognitive and social development. The role that Television plays in socializing children is very great. Television can be educational and beneficial, but their negative aspect, such as the amount of aggressive and violent activity it displays daily, is causing grave concern to parents and educators around the world, especially in Pakistan. Whether and how we will manage to control the harmful effects of television and harness its potential for the good of children is a subject of ongoing debate.

Though not yet investigated empirically, viewing is, generally believed to generate social forces of undeniable influence in Pakistan. With more than 1.5 million sets in use and about seven hours of daily transmission, the number of viewers is now estimated to be over 12 million. These statistics may be modest by international standard but these are not insignificant in a country where' the rate of literacy and per capita income are still very low.

Children do not generally become consistent viewers until they are about 3 years old. Even then they do not watch the set constantly because their span of attention is very short. Os they get easily distracted. Now-a-days the working parents are so busy; they don’t have enough time spend with their kids. The mother has to do the cooking and look after the child simultaneously; there may not be servants also. So she switches on the TV and puts the child in front of it. Slowly it becomes addicted to the television. And the mother blames the child for regularly watching TV. Most of the ‘speech delay’ cases seen among babies are caused due to the excessive TV watching. Television watching is not interactive. It is a one way mode of activity. In order to develop speech, as the young one begins to produce the babbling sounds; we must reproduce a similar sound, so that the young one is motivated to talk more, which slowly leads to verbal communication.

TV viewing patterns are affected not only by program content but by the formal features of television as well, such as , high action, loud music and visual and auditory special effects. These formal features, which help to attract as well as retain children’s attention, are to some degree, independent of programme content, and they are important for younger and older children alike (Kapoor). Children increase their viewing time gradually until, in preadolescence, they are watching TV almost four hours a day, and housewives too watch most of the TV programmes. Often there is clash between their children regarding the channel they prefer. The elders would prefer the serials, while children want their favourite cartoons. Children watch a variety of programmes, boys prefer action, adventure and sports programmes, and girls prefer human social drama and music.

Small kids will not understand what they see on television, in a reasonable manner. Children must be able to distinguish between fantasy and reality. Displaying what has been called ‘magic window thinking’ the little kids are likely to believe that TV images are real as the people and things about them. During the age of 2 and 3 they come to understand that the characters and objects they see on TV are not actually present inside the set. As kids grow and their cognitive skills continue it improve, their ability to distinguish fantasy from reality improves as well. When they get older, children understand that shows are made up, scripted and rehearsed.

The impact of violence in television can be reduced by helping young children distinguish between what they see in Television and reality. We must also constantly inform them that television is an unrealistic portrayal of the real world and aggressive behaviours are not as universal in the real world as they appear to be on TV. If we go on watching interesting TV programmes we will not realize the time that has elapsed. Due to excessive TV watching our attitudes, moods, behaviour will all get affected.

Television viewing takes time, and may displace other activities, such as sports, exercises or even talking to others. Guests are not properly taken care of if they visit other houses during popular TV serials. Also, in most of the houses the TVs are placed in the drawing room. Even though we will talk with the guests, our attention will be constantly diverted by the TV. We must make it a practice to switch off the TV when guests come.

Earlier, children loved to visit other housed with their parents, but now-a-days, if we ask them to join us, they will say “Amma, please, we will sit at home and watch TV,” They prefer sitting at home and watching TV over visiting relatives or friends. Parents must also ensure that children are getting sufficient physical exercises. It is also not a good practice to place TV in the dining room. In the busy modern time, there is lack of communication between the family members. Watching television during dinning hours, however, will prevent family members from conversing with one another freely.

Some parents will switch on the TV and feed the children. The parents will be happy as the little one opens his mouth like gold fish and swallows the food while watching TV. The parent is not realising that she herself is developing in the child that habit of watching TV while eating food. Now-a-days some children watch TV even while doing home work. This practice must be dissuaded from the beginning stage itself. All the children’s programmes and channels are intermixed with advertisements. These advertisements have a definite influence on the tender mind. Fast food snacks filled with masala and aginomotto are harmful to health. As these snakes provide tattoos and stickers children often try to influence their parent’s consumer choice; parents must not entertain this.

The present trend in the theme of serials is not satisfactory. In all the stories, importance is given to the negative aspects of human personality. They depict the different ways to cheat other people, the unhealthy relationships between the husbands and wives, the shortcut ways to get money buy cheating people. Violence is given preference. By watching these types of serials, throughout the time, the behaviour of even the elder generation seem to have changed. They have become narrow-minded and they tend to find fault with others and enjoy gossips and go into negative thinking. In the past, grandparents loved to look after the young ones. But now the modern grandma is reluctant to find time to spend with their grandchildren among these never-ending serials. This is a cyclic process. Children learn through imitation, if they elderly persons are behaving like this, how we can blame the little ones” as a result a selfish generation is emerging!

The parents must go on talking to the child while watching TV, that is, they must explain the programme contents to they younger ones. This will help the children to make important connection between actions and their consequences. Studies have shown that children whose parents explain events and clarify information tend to be more imaginative, less aggressive and less hyperactive and tend to understand the contents of the programme better. But at present, the parents do not spend time with children, nor do they discuss the values of the programme. Co-viewing can also help a child to cope with the fear produced by the programme. The friendly relationship between the parents and children will also improve.

The programmes in the National Geographic Channel are also very informative; the travelogue helps to gather information on other countries. By watching such programmes we will get a feeling that we are actually visiting these places. The important buildings and places shown in such programmes give us valuable knowledge. Children will be able to know about and understand different culture.

The important thing to keep in mind is that parents must not blame the children for watching TV. Together they must prepare a tentative timetable for Television-viewing. Children must be given some time to watch their favourite programmes, but parents must have an eye on the programmes which the children watch. There must be open discussions among the family members and parents must provide a positive guidance to children. This will help them to learn to evaluate the TV programmes and what they see. Also, we must not discuss in front of the child his/her habit of watching TV throughout the time, even if that be the case. We must slowly steer him out of the habit instead.

The Bond Between Children And Television by Medimanage.com

"Mom please change the channel my cartoon program is going to start now." This is a common scene in everybody's house. Gone are the times when children used to love to go out and play. The times are changes and so are children's choices. They like to devote most of their time to idiot box. But have you ever thought what does your child actually gets after watching television?? How detrimental it can be for them sometimes?

Children are very fond of watching television. They will not miss any of the cartoon programs. Children love watching television because they get to enjoy cartoons, movies, songs.  Channels like ‘Animal planet' and ‘Discovery' act as best of providing knowledge about different places and adventurous things to children. While on other hand, programs like ‘Mad Art' and ‘Art Attack' instill lot if creativity among the young ones. These shows are the most loved ones among the children they faithfully watch them.

But what about channels like Cartoon Network and Disney……what purpose are they serving??? Earlier there were specific slots where cartoon programs were aired, but now we have special cartoon channels which run 24 hours a day. How this is entertaining all the time?

Effects of Television on Children

  • Television eats up playing time of the children. If you go to see, watching television is nothing but sedentary pastime for children. It is making children less active, lazy and obese; they prefer wasting hours in front of the idiot box rather than going out and play.
  • The first few years of child are very important for brain development. It is important to keep television viewing to minimum as it can restrict brain development and hamper social interaction with others. Behavioral changes are observed in many children. They get fussy and irritating if you don't allow them to watch television.
  • The kind of violence that children watch during their cartoon shows and movies can make them aggressive and irritable, while some children tend to be fearful and quiet.
  • Children sometimes try to emulate many things from what they watch on television. They want to dress up like their favorite characters, want to look like them etc. and sometimes even try their hands on drinking and smoking. To read more The Bond between Children and Television

Rod Woodson

Early years

Woodson is the youngest of three siblings, with whom he had close relationships. His father, the late James Woodson, was African-American, and his mother, Linda Jo, is white; they were married providing a stable home for Joe, Jamie and Rod . Woodson attended R. Nelson Snider High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He played defensive back and a variety of offensive skill positions and was all-state his junior and senior seasons. in addition to football, he won both the high and low hurdles state championships in both his junior and senior seasons; and played varsity basketball his junior and senior seasons, making all conference his senior year.

College career

Woodson accepted a full scholarship to play football at Purdue University, in part because of a desire to pursue a degree in electrical engineering. Woodson played primarily as a defensive back and kick returner, but also saw time on offense as a running back and wide receiver. He was named an All-American defensive back in 1985 and 1986, and was a three time All-Big Ten first team selection. In his final collegiate game, Woodson gained over 150 of combined rushing and receiving yards, in addition to making ten tackles and forcing a fumble, leading Purdue to a victory over arch-rival Indiana.

Woodson left Purdue with 13 individual records, notably tying the school record with eleven career interceptions. He currently is ranked in the top ten in career interceptions, solo tackles, total tackles, passes deflected, and kickoff return yardage as a Boilermaker.

In addition to his exploits on the gridiron, Woodson was also an accomplished track and field athlete at Purdue, and twice awarded All-America honors. He currently holds the school records in both the 60 and 110 meter hurdles, events in which he earned five Big Ten championships. In 1984, he qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 100 meter hurdles, but elected to continue his football career in the NFL after graduating from Purdue with a degree in criminal justice.

Woodson was inducted into the Purdue Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003.

Pro football career

In 1987, Woodson was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers as the 10th overall draft pick. He returned punts and played defensive cornerback for Pittsburgh through the 1996 season. On November 22, 1987 he was listed third on the depth chart in a game against the division rival Cincinnati Bengals played at Cincinnati Riverfront Stadium, Woodson was inserted into the secondary. In the final minute of the second quarter, he recorded his first career interception when he picked off a Boomer Esiason pass.

He was a fan favorite and a banner that hung for years in Three Rivers Stadium stated: "Rod Is God". A highlight came in 1995 when Woodson became the first player to return from reconstructive knee surgery in the same season. That year he tore his ACL against the Detroit Lions in the first game and returned to play in the Super Bowl XXX between the Steelers and the Dallas Cowboys just 19 weeks later. In that game, he broke up a pass intended for Michael Irvin, hopped up and pointed at his reconstructed knee. In a game against the Houston Oilers, Woodson hit Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon on a cornerback blitz. The hit gave Moon a concussion and forced him to leave the game.

Woodson's career took a somewhat nomadic turn after free agency from Pittsburgh, after the Rooney family elected not to renew his contract over a pay dispute as well as the salary cap. (The team had a similar dispute with Franco Harris in 1984 and later with Alan Faneca in 2008.) Although he remained to raise his family in Pittsburgh and later made amends with the Rooneys, he hopped between three additional franchises, becoming one of the few modern cornerbacks to successfully make a transition to the safety position, following in the footsteps of Ronnie Lott. Woodson signed with the San Francisco 49ers for the 1997 season, the Baltimore Ravens for the years 1998 to 2001 (where he won Super Bowl XXXV), and the Oakland Raiders for 2002 and 2003 (where he appeared in his third Super Bowl). In the Raiders 2002 Super Bowl season, 37-year old Woodson led the NFL in interceptions (8) for the first time in his career. His last interception came on November 16, 2003 against the Minnesota Vikings Daunte Culpepper.

NFL records and accomplishments

Woodson is among the NFL's all time leaders in played as a defensive back and interceptions. In his 17 NFL seasons, Woodson recorded 71 interceptions, 1,483 interception return yards, 32 fumble recoveries (15 offensive and 17 defensive), 137 fumble return yards, 4,894 kickoff return yards, 2,362 punt return yards, and 17 touchdowns (12 interception returns, 1 fumble return, 2 kickoff returns, 2 punt returns). He holds the league record for interceptions returned for touchdowns with 12, and is tied with 11 other players for the record for most fumble recoveries in a single game (3). His 1,483 interception return yards are also an NFL record. His 32 fumble recoveries are a record amongst defensive players. His 71 interceptions rank 3rd all time.

Woodson was named to the Pro Bowl eleven times, a record for a defensive back. He was also the first player to earn trips to the Pro Bowl at cornerback, safety and kick returner. He was named 1993's NFL Defensive Player of the Year by the Associated Press. He was also a 7 time All-Pro selection. Woodson finished second to Darrell Green in the 1988 NFL Fastest Man Contest.

In 1994, he was named to the NFL's 75th Anniversary Team. What made it notable was that Woodson was one of only five active players to be named to the team. The others were Jerry Rice, Joe Montana, Reggie White and Ronnie Lott. In 1999, he was ranked number 87 on The Sporting ' list of the 100 Greatest Football Players. The College Football has also honored him as one of the 100 greatest players of the 20th century.

In 2007, he was ranked number 22 on USA Today list of the 25 best NFL players of the past 25 years.

It is unlikely that the Steelers will remove Woodson's number 26 from circulation, however, since the number is currently being worn by longtime cornerback Deshea Townsend, who as of the 2008 season has now played longer with the Steelers than Woodson did. (The team drafted Townsend in 1998 around the same time that Woodson signed with the archrival Ravens, and still had an acrimonious relationship with the Rooneys at the time.) Mel Blount's number 47 has also conspicuously remained in circulation since his retirement after the 1983 season.

On January 31, 2009, Woodson was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility becoming the 18th Steelers-related person to be enshrined. Woodson named his good friend and business associate Tracy Foster as his presenter. Foster went to Indiana to play basketball for Bob Knight. Foster runs Woodson car dealership in Pittsburgh.

Retirement

Woodson was released by the Oakland Raiders on July 27, 2004 after failing his team physical. His replacement at free safety for the Raiders was Stuart Schweigert, who coincidentally, broke Woodson's career interception record at Purdue.

He now helps coach the defense at Valley Christian Senior High in Dublin, California along with former Raider John Parrella. Woodson lives in Pleasanton, California with his wife Nickie and their five children . His son, Demitrius, plays safety and wide receiver there as well as kick returner.

Since 1994, Woodson has operated an annual youth football camp, the Woodson/Fabini Football Camp, on the grounds of his former high school. He is also a partner in Woodson Motorsports, a BMW motorcycle dealership and repair shop in Fort Wayne.

Currently Woodson splits his time between NFL Network studios in Los Angeles, his home in Pleasanton, and his cottage in Coldwater, Michigan. He was also part of the studio team for BBC Sport's NFL coverage in 2007, including Super Bowl XLII and Super Bowl XLIII.

Rod Woodson sponsored a charity benefit dinner and auction on July 25, 2009 at the Oakland Coliseum - just two weeks before he entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame. All proceeds went to the Football and Scholarship programs at Valley Christian School, the high school where Rod coaches.

Only then would we have celebrated the arrival of New Year in the true sense. We should practise and propagate newer ideals in our daily life. Vedanta declares, Aham etat na -I am not this. Aham means T, the Atmic principle and 'this' refers to body. We should not give scope to ahamkara or ego by identifying ourselves with the body. 'I' does not correspond to the body. • TIRUVALLUVAR –"Though you speak unkind words to a man's face, do not speak words behind his back heedless of consequent harm./ Though every word is full of kindly virtue, a man's mean back-biting will betray his empty heart."
  • TOM HARKIN –"We will not give in to terrorists... We will win this struggle - not for ; glory, nor wealth, nor power, but for justice, freedom, and for peace."

  • YOGA VASISHTA –"0 Rama, there is no intellect, no ignorance, no mind and no individual soul (jiva). They are all imagined in Brahmn. Like an empty vessel in space, the knower of Truth is empty both within and without, while at the same time he is full within and without like a vessel immersed in the ocean... Backdrops for Successful photography Business

If you have a desire to set up your own home based business, just start out in with digital . It is not that difficult to take beautiful shots with your camera if you do it the right way. To start the business, you do need a basic camera with manual controls, and some basic office stationery. You can run your business from home. For a successful business you must be able to offer a variety of backgrounds to your clients.

In Indoor shooting you may pose your subject on the floor or they could be posed on and around their furniture in the living room, etc. In outdoor shooting outside portraits could be in their back yard, at the , a local park, etc.

Mostly people want a beautiful portrait that singles them out as individuals, whenever possible, always try for a location that has meaning for them.

You must use formal backdrops. Try to go for simple backgrounds. They are often the best. There are several types of backdrop materials:

Paper backdrop - Large rolls of paper come in most any color you can imagine. They can be purchased at many local camera stores and are relatively inexpensive.

Painted Canvas backdrop - These can provide some truly stunning portraits. Many backdrop suppliers create them and they can be ordered over the Internet if you don't happen to be near a supplier.

What background size should I use? It is the first question, which may arise in your mind. The most common backdrop sizes to choose from are 6x9, 10x12, and 10x20.

6x9 - This size is used for headshots and very small item commercial photography mostly.

10x12 - Primarily used in shooting individuals and headshots. Full lengths are possible for an individual on this size. However, you are limited in your lighting and posing due to its size.

10x20 - This is by far the most versatile backdrop size. It can be used for families, couples, weddings, bridals, commercial, and everything you would use the smaller sizes for. There may be times when you are photographing larger groups, 8 and above, when two 10’x20’s of the same or similar pattern may come in handy (Hang one horizontally and lay the other on the floor so the seam is unseen).

I think you can probably see my personal preference. 10x20s are by far the most versatile and you can use them on all types of photography. Give your client some options; take a few full-length shots, three-quarter length shots, and shots with props. They will be impressed and most likely order more than they would have ordered otherwise. I see far too many photographers limiting themselves by getting smaller backdrops; they think they are saving themselves money. Looking at the big picture, photographers need to be ready to handle the bridals and full lengths of and large families. We should all cater to bridals and family portraiture because there is a lot of money in this avenue. Far too many studios are not equipped to handle these high profit sessions because of inadequate backdrops.

The COMM-ON Man

-The city that never sleeps, united we stand divided we fall, all for one and one for all…! Words great to say and even greater to hear, but what about everything behind the yellow street light , the grand weddings and posh social-life . Is there a ray of hope , a so called spider-man? An element people can look upto? Some questions can never be answered….
In a world where MIGHT IS RIGHT and a place where even the poor chicken is doubted with its motive to cross the road(the famous question why did the chicken cross the road?) it is the commoner that comes under the scanner. there is no such thing as basic right. A man cannot walk free on the road without the dreaded thought in his mind that am I even walking straight? The fundamental rights of NINE to FIVEVERS are seized by people who jus want the limelight. If this continues ..eight year olds may not fly kites…small children may never enjoy the happiness of the water coming out of a water tanker instead of rain water…the grounds which made so much noise with 100 balls flying everywhere may jus have the only noise coming out of the arguments of neighbors.
Its very easy to say even one person can make a difference but the questions is reframed every time a person tries to make a deference.
In a world where money can buy you even happiness there is no one with a good intension. Even if one thinks good he is put behind bars by illiterate people who cant think good. When we were children our parents taught us always help others, teachers taught us the more you give the more you get and to top it all every book you read told you India is a democratic country where one can talk, walk free but is that actually possible..? can we help others without the fear of something going wrong? Can we give and expect it to reach the intended destination? Can we shout or talk without looking behind our shoulders?
I guess some questions will just be left unanswered and some will be better off unanswered…? Behind the clash of film stars and the talks of big men , beneath the balance sheets of faulty companies and the famous BMC potholes , there is a world, a place , a family , a man and this man cant take anymore. One day he will not be a common man after-all and he will be quoted saying "do what you have to and say what you want because the people who mind don't matter, and the people who matter don't mind"

A Tiffany Necklace

The moment I knew the person who would share the apartment with me was a man, I shouted at my landlord: "What is the matter? How can you allow a man to move in since I am a ?"

"Ok, if you are not satisfied, you can move out!" My landlord - a fat lady said in a matter-of-fact way. "Jack is a good and pleasing boy! It is ok for you two to live together!"

With nowhere to live, I had to restrain my temper.

The next day, a tall and handsome guy moved in, with a suitcase and several other bags in hand. Though his face full of smile, I was cold to him with the thought that he took up my private space.

However, as days went on, I found him a nice guy, who was very good at cooking. We made a deal that he took charge of cooking and I was responsible for washing clothes. Every day after work, we went for a walk, played badminton, talked about funny things which had happened around us happily. Gradually, I found myself dependent on him, and look forward to meeting him.

One day, when I was going to wash his coat, a blue box fell down from it. It was nice Necklaces! Out of curiosity, I opened it! In front of my eyes were a beautiful silver Tiffany heart-shaped necklace and a small card. My heart was broken when I saw the words on the card. "Will you be my girlfriend?" was what I saw. Obviously, he had fallen in love with a girl, which meant he would soon leave me and I was going to be alone again. Tears rolled down my cheeks.

"I cooked them today!" I pretended to smile and said to him.

"It is strange! You never cook at home and often eat instant noodles! It's me who come up and save you! Ha ha ha!" He seemed happy.

How stupid and humiliating was I to behave like this. Suddenly, he hugged me tightly: "You little fool, this Tiffany necklace is for you! It's you who I love!"
