Getting "high" on enamel paint?!?
I bought some gold Plasti-Kote enamel paint today to repaint the gold detail on my bedroom furniture - its fairly old and has gone dull and faded.
I opened the windows to ventilate the area, but within 20 mins of starting I was feeling so sick and dizzy and faint I had to stop painting and lie down! I still feel really weird!
There was nothing on the tin to say that you needed to take special precautions because of the fumes.
Is it normal to feel like this using enamel paint? I'm a bit worried now because we have to sleep in the room tonight and one of the pieces of furniture I painted is outside my baby's son's bedroom. I only painted a very small amount but it still made me feel really weird!
You can use a large window fan pointing outside to help with ventilation and go in shorter sessions to see if that helps. Different people respond differently to paint fumes. They can make you feel very sick if you get too much, as you have discovered, but if the air is moving and you don't get too much at once, you can do fine with it.
As for the baby's room, yes, open the windows and run the fan facing out for a while to be sure to clear it of any fumes that might have collected in there. Be sure to do that every time you paint and do it after you have cleared your room so you don't have a lag effect in his room. And of course be sure he's not around when you are painting.
When you are done clearing the room of fumes, ask someone who was not in the house while you were painting to come into the rooms and see how strongly they can smell the fumes at that point.
