Top ten things to do in Hawaii

O'ahu is the island most often visited by travelers to Hawaii. It's known as "The Gathering Place." There are so many things to do that you'll never be able to do them all in just one visit. We've chosen our top ten things to do on the island of O'ahu, Hawaii.

1. Attend a Luau
O'ahu offers a number of excellent luaus. Germaine's Luau is held on a private beach on Barber's Point east of Honolulu. The Polynesian Cultural Center's Ali'i Luau is held in La'ie on O'ahu's North Shore. My favorite luau on O'ahu is the Paradise Cove Luau which is held on a 12-acre beach at the Ko Olina Resort and features great food, Polynesian entertainment, traditional Hawaiian games, and lessons in lei making.

2. Discover Historic Honolulu
Located in the heart of Honolulu you'll find many of Hawaii's most historic buildings including the 'Iolani Palace home to Hawaii's last monarchs and the only palace on U.S. soil. You'll also want to visit the Hawaii State Capitol, the Kamehameha I Statue, Kawaiaha'o Church - the first Christian church in Hawaii, the Mission Houses Museum and the Old Federal Building. All of historic Honolulu is within easy walking distance of downtown parking at the equally famous Aloha Tower.

3. Drive to O'ahu's North Shore
O'ahu's North Shore is home to the top world-class surfers in the world when the winter waves reach their majestic heights. It is an easy hour's drive from Waikiki to lovely Haleiwa town where the North Shore begins for most visitors as they travel in an eastward direction around O'ahu. Be sure to stop at the Bonzai Pipeline where you can see surfers make their way through the middle of a wave.

4. Explore the Bishop Museum
The Bishop Museum is recognized as the State Museum of Natural and Cultural History. While the name of the museum is officially the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum, the museum was actually established by her husband Charles Bishop to whom Bernice had left her personal property upon her death in 1885 fulfilling their dream of preserving Hawaii's cultural heritage. Throughout its history, the museum's commitment has been the gathering and the dissemination of information on Hawaii and the Pacific.

5. Hike to Makapu'u Point
One of O'ahu's most rewarding hikes is the 2.5-mile round trip hike to Makapu'u Point, the most eastern point of O'ahu. The hike to the point is mostly uphill and takes about an hour each way. If you take the hike, do it early in the day when the sun will be behind the cliff face as you climb. The views of Waimanalo Bay to the north and Sandy Beach and Koko Head to the southwest are spectacular. Is a a great spot for whale watching from December to May.

6. Honor America at Pearl Harbor and the Arizona Memorial
Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial remain top tourist destinations in Hawaii with over 1,500,000 visitors annually. The addition of the Battleship Missouri and the 1999 opening of the USS Missouri Memorial have further enhanced the importance of this historic area. A visit to the Arizona Memorial is a solemn and sobering experience, even for those who were not alive when the attack occurred. You are literally standing over a gravesite where 1177 men lost their lives.

7. See Waikiki and O'ahu from the Top of Diamond Head
Diamond Head looms large over the Waikiki. Actually named Le'ahi by Hawaiians, it received its more well known name in the late 1700's when British seamen saw calcite crystals sparkling in the sunshine and thought they had found diamonds. A hike to the top of Diamond Head takes about an hour over a well-worn path. The summit offers a spectacular 365-degree view of O'ahu and is a must trip for photography enthusiasts.

8. Shop in Waikiki and in the Greater Honolulu Area
Waikiki is a great place to shop and offers prestigious retailers such as Tiffany & Co., Chanel, Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent as well as more modest stores such as the ever-present ABC Stores and the world-famous International Market Place. The Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center is undergoing a major renovation and contains 150 stores and restaurants on four levels. The DFS Galleria the only place for foreign guests in Hawaii to enjoy duty-free savings on the world's leading luxury brands.

9. Tour the Polynesian Cultural Center
The Polynesian Cultural Center is Hawaii's top-paid visitor attraction. The PCC features seven Polynesian "islands" in a beautifully landscaped 42-acre setting. The Ali'i Luau takes guests on a nostalgic rip back in time to learn about the royalty of Hawaii while enjoying traditional Hawaiian luau food and entertainment. The Center's Rainbows of Paradise Canoe Pageant show is performed daily on the main lagoon. The PCC is also home to Hawaii's first and only IMAX™ Theater.

10. Visit the Honolulu Zoo and Waikiki Aquarium
Located in Kapi'olani Park on the east end of Waikiki, the Honolulu Zoo is the largest zoo within a radius of 2,300 miles and unique in that it is the only zoo in the United States originating from a King's grant of royal lands to the people. It is too often overlooked by visitors. Located nearby at the shoreline, the Waikiki Aquarium is the third oldest public aquarium in the United States. Exhibits, programs, and research focus on the aquatic life of Hawaii and the tropical Pacific.

Starting a small freelance photography company?

Can anyone point me in the right direction of what tax forms, etc. I need to file to get started? Thanks!
I live in TN if that makes any difference.

You'll want to track your expenses by category, such as advertising, film developing services, film, cameras (which I suggest you depreciate over time rather than writing off the first year.) Get a copy of a schedule c from the IRS web site.. www.irs.gov. It doesn't have to be a 2008 form for this exercise... just... look it over and see what categories they list for expenses so you'll know how to break it all down.

Also, keep a mileage log in your car, write down beginning mileage and ending mileages so you can figure your business miles. At tax time, you'll need to list the make and model of the vehicle used, total miles driven for the year, commuting miles, other miles, and business miles driven. You'll also need to decide - this year only - whether you're going to go with standard mileage deduction (so many cents per mile) or actual expenses. If you choose actual expenses in the first year, you'll be locked into that every year thereafter. If you go with the standard mileage rate, you can switch off if you have a year where actual expenses are more than that. If you use your vehicle less than 50%, you won't be eligible to depreciate it, and if you use it less than 50% in any given year, you'll need to recapture any depreciation taken on it. Also, you can't use depreciation and the standard mileage rate together.

Okay.. so.. let me re-wind my brain here....

I suggest you set aside 10% of the gross income you take in from the photography company for taxes. Just plunk it into a savings account and pretend it doesn't exist until tax time. That way, if it's not needed, you have a cushion, but if it is needed, it'll be there.

All you have to file in order to get going is what I call DBA papers, filed in the county where you expect to do most of your business. You'll probably have to collect sales tax on your work, so you'll want to check with the comptroller's office of the state where you're working. If it's more than one state, then there will be two offices, and two tax rates, and two tax forms, etc.

If you do contract work and get more than $600 for the year from a company, you need to file a W-9 form, providing them with your tax id number, so you won't be subjected to backup withholding.

As a sole proprietor, you'll need to file a schedule c with your 1040 form. That lists your expenses by category, and helps you figure out what your net income is for the year. If you show a net profit, which you need to do, most years, and that net profit is over $400, you'll be subject to self-employment taxes. That's the self-employed person's equivalent to employer-withheld social security and medicare taxes. Since you're self-employed, you have to pay a higher percentage than someone whose employer is paying part of theirs. Hence that 10% I mentioned earlier.

So, go out there, take lots of photos, make some money, and hopefully enjoy yourself.

Hope this helps.

best wedding photography
what are the best/most informative digital wedding photography books.?

I am looking to get in to wedding photography and would like to pick up some books, what are some good ones for a beginner, I noticed a lot of them talk about transition from film which I don't need.

Are you a beginning photographer? Try some basic photography first. Wedding photography is not a genre for novice photographers.

I am all for learning through books, but weddings are one thing that may be best learned as an apprentice to a working photographer. (That is assuming that you have quite a bit of knowledge af photography in general, and understand both technical and artistic basics.) That's not to say you can't get anything from a book, of course you can depending largely on your learning style and self-motivation. One book for any photographer has to be "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson. He also has books on portraiture and composition that are well done. For weddings specifically, "Portrait Photography Handbook", Monte Zucker, "Existing Light for Wedding and Portrait Photography", Bill Hurter, and Steve Sint's "Wedding Photography: Art, Business and Style". "The Art of Wedding Photography" by Bambi Cantrell.

Again I stress weddings are not for new photographers. It is harder than it seems, and the stakes are high for the parties involved. Best wishes.

World Aids Day, fundraising idea help?

I need some more ideas for fundraising for World Aids Day.

So far I have:

•Teachers guess the baby photo competition
•Red non-uniform day at school and make a donation for the privilege of wearing red
•Sponsored bike ride dressed completely in red
•A red-themed dinner and ask everyone to make a donation

And obviously selling the red ribbons, the red-themed dinners will be school dinners.

Any more ideas, I'd like something really original this year if possible.

What about a Coffee fundraiser?
Specialty coffee and beverages are an exploding market nationwide and it practically sells itself. Java Joe's Roasting Company is an upstate New York based coffee roaster, who specializes in fundraising. Organizations will realize a profit of $2.50 or more per bag sold. The products will be customized to promote your organization (free of charge) and there are no set up fees or minimums. This fundraising program is equitable and offers your supporters a first class practical product that is perfect for every day use. Good luck! I hope I was able to help.
