Clothes 101: Needs and Proper Care

If you are a first time parent, there are many needs that must be accomplished before your baby's arrival. One important, and fun job, is purchasing baby clothing. However, with such a large selection of baby clothes, you may be asking yourself which of these adorable little items are required.

Onesies

"Onesies" are basically baby t-shirts and are a necessary baby clothing purchase. To keep the onesie from creeping up and exposing your baby's belly, most onesies have snaps in the crotch. They can be worn alone or as an undergarment. Onesies, also known as rompers, come in basic white, colored or patterned varieties. For your basics, you should have between 5 to 10 onesies.

Sleepers

Sleepers are one-piece items with long legs and long or short sleeves. They usually have snaps down the legs for easy accessibility for late night diaper changes.

When preparing your basics, you should have between 5 to 8 baby sleepers. These are necessary as it is recommended that a newborn not sleep with thick blankets. This could inadvertently cause suffocation. The best material for both your baby's warmth and comfort are cotton or fleece sleepers.

Baby Socks

For your baby's requirements, you should purchase between 6 to 8 pairs of baby socks. Although socks are not required in warmer weather, they should be worn if taking your little one outside in chilly temperatures. They are also indispensable at night if your baby is wearing a sleeper without feet.

Baby socks are made of either thick or thin weaves. You should purchase a combination of both, as thin socks are better if your baby is to wear shoes.

Hats

Hats are baby clothing essentials for your little bundle. When taking care of your newborn, it is important to keep them adequately warm. Newborns often have difficulty regulating their body temperature and much of their heat escapes through their head.

It is recommended that your newborn wear a hat through his or her first month of life. After that, it is not as crucial unless you are taking them outside on a chilly or cold day. For this purpose, you should have 1 or 2 fairly snug, hats for your baby.

Proper Care for Baby Clothing

When caring for baby clothing, there are two schools of thought. The first is that your little bundle of joy's clothes should be washed in special detergents to alleviate the risk of skin allergies. There are a few varieties of mild laundry soaps that are scent and dye-free. Many of these detergents are aimed at the baby market, such as Dreft that boasts "A gentle clean. Just for baby".

The other school of thought does not believe that "gentle" laundry soaps are required for baby clothing. If your baby's skin does not react adversely to certain detergents, then a special detergent is not necessary.

Stain Removal

Your bundle of pink or blue will not think twice about staining their cutest outfits. Certain formulas, baby food and stains caused by leaking diapers are often difficult to remove from baby clothing. If pretreated before washing, some of the most stubborn stains can be eliminated, leaving the clothing both clean and in pristine condition. One tried and true stain remover is Oxi-Clean. You may want to "audition" or try different stain removers to find the one best suited for your laundry needs.

Wash New Clothes Before Wear

Before dressing your baby in new clothes, it is essential that you wash them first. Although baby clothing may look fresh and clean on department store hangers, many have come into contact with dirt, little four legged creatures and bugs during the shipping and packaging process.

Minor skin irritations may also result from sizing placed on many pieces of baby clothing. Sizing is used to keep items looking nice until they are purchased.

Getting prepared for your little one's new arrival is both a joyous and stressful time. Knowing what baby clothing is essential in your little one's layette and how to properly care for their clothing is one of the many tasks that lay before you. Knowledge is power and being prepared is half the battle.

5 Tips For A Successful Baptism Or Christening With Baptism Outfits And Rompers

Until around the 4th century, baptism was mostly performed on adults, but as time has passed this initiation into Christian life is now commonly performed on infants, with a naming ceremony included within the service. The birth of a new child into the family is always a cause for celebration and for many Christian families, this celebration includes a baptism or christening ceremony, where the family and the church officially welcome your child to the beginning of their Christian life. A christening or baptism can be a difficult thing to plan for many new parents with a range of factors to take into account. However, you will find your day runs smoothly and is enjoyed by all - even your little one - by following the few easy tips given below.

1. Don't forget the simple stuff-plan in advance

Perhaps the easiest way to make your child's christening or baptism as successful as possible is to ensure that all aspects of the day are as well thought-out as possible. The type of day you wish to have can determine a lot of other factors, including such things as the location of the event, choice of attire and nature of the ceremony itself. So remember that a little bit of advanced planning will lead to a better outcome!

2. Choose your location

Traditionally, baptisms and christenings are held within a church, and for many, holding the ceremony in a sanctified place is a significant and important aspect of the ceremony. Depending on the time of year however, it is also possible to hold the ceremony within your home or even in your garden. Holding the ceremony at home can often be a more intimate experience and you also have all the advantages of home to care for your child's comfort.

3. Choose your child's Godparents

Once you have chosen the location you will be able to discuss with your priest or pastor about the different requirements you have for the ceremony, and also inform them of who your child's godparents are. Asking a close friend or family member to act as your child's Godparent can be a very rewarding experience and an important responsibility (in most cases these will have been chosen in advance to the ceremony plans being made).

4. Choose your child's attire.

Your next decision will be about what your child will wear for their special day. Christenings or baptisms would traditionally see children wearing christening gowns because they are symbolic of the christening event. These christening gowns are usually white, in order to symbolize innocence and purity, and can be purchased in a wide range of materials such as cotton batiste, shantung, silk, and high quality polyester matte satin. Christening gowns can also come in more simplistic, modern designs which are appropriate for the occasion but can offer more comfort for your child. Or if a gown does not suit your taste, high quality romper suits are a great alternative! They are appropriate attire for christenings and baptisms (especially for boys) and can be purchased in a wide range of styles and finishes. These suits can be designed to include shirts and ties and smartly made lower sections to create the look of a small suit which is perfect for an occasion such as this.

5. Finally, consider the time of year

You may also need to think about the time of year in which the event will be held. The temperature of the day will help determine what kind of material will be best in terms of its thickness and also the sleeve length of the christening gowns or suit. To help keep your baby warm and also looking very smart you could purchase a small cardigan if you are looking to have short sleeves but are worried about your child becoming cold during the day. The quality of the fabric is also important. This is an event where all eyes will be on your child, so it is important that he/she looks handsome. Purchasing beautifully made romper suits or christening gowns is one of the main ways to achieve this. By ensuring that the star of the day is comfortable, warm, and looking dashing, this special day is sure to run as smoothly as possible.

Decorating Ideas: Making Use Of Balloons

Having a baby is one of the most marvelous wonders of life, and one rite of passage for every new mother is to have an unforgettable baby shower to celebrate the upcoming birth of her child. A baby shower can provide an eventful opportunity for the mother to showcase the miracle of life through being pregnant and the elation of being a mother soon. Women just love to throw baby showers to pay tribute to the hardships of mothers during pregnancy and delivery. Baby shower decorating ideas usually have a general theme, with decorations such as balloons. However, these mere balloons can be used to make baby showers more appealing and fun.

Generally, colorful balloons can be made into wonderful decorations. There are assorted colors, sizes and styles of balloons that are filled with helium. There are also specialty balloons that are made of Mylar or foil, which usually comes with a variety of shapes and graphic designs. Balloons that will be used in baby showers can be in forms of feeding bottles, rattles, teddy bears, building blocks, and any other items related to infancy.

So, before choosing the balloons that will be incorporated into baby shower decorating ideas, decide on the theme and the color of the other items that will be used in the day, such as plates, napkins and other party accessories. Once you have all those items, you can now choose the balloons that will complement with the theme of the party. Balloons can also be mixed used with streamers and laced on the ceiling, as well as they can be placed along with tables to add an eye candy.

Balloons can also be used on a lot of things, other than just being mere decorations. They can be used, for instance, in baby shower games. Try to use long and skinny balloons that look like sausages to have the guests of the baby shower try to figure out how many it will take to get around the belly of the pregnant mother when connected from end to end. You could also use balloons to make mothers remember how it feels like to be pregnant. Try to host a game where the guests stuff balloons under their shirts, appearing to be pregnant, and then race on the other side of the room without losing as much balloon as they can. Such games incorporated with balloons will surely entertain the guests and the soon-to-be mother alike.

Balloons can also make a striking statement about the baby shower by incorporating them with the gifts. If a stroller will be given to the mom-to-be as a gift, you could fill the stroller with balloons for an added nicety and surprise. For the more traditional gifts, you could attach helium-filled balloons to the ribbons to add more appeal on them.

If you think that balloons are only for interior decorations for baby showers, then think again. Balloons can also be incorporated on baby shower decorating ideas outside of the room. They can be used to decorate baby shower yard signs, which are inexpensive and easy to set up. The guests will surely love those balloons that will welcome them on the baby shower.

Getting Creative and Getting the Kudos

Shopping for creative baby shower gifts can be challenging, even to the most experienced moms and dads going to a baby shower or being given one. Why? They all experience that Jell-O in the arm feeling when faced with the daunting task of selecting that one gift that will bring on appreciative smiles. As parents, they want to give something both beautiful and practical, just like what they wanted when they got tons of baby gifts during the baby showers hosted for them.

Be creative. Shopping for baby gifts can be interesting. True, traditional baby shower gifts are appropriate for the occasion, but you can pull in a fast one by making these gifts truly creative, bearing your personal touch. How?

Traditional items like gift baskets can contain personalized bibs, booties, and even onesies. Hand-knitted blankets, picture frames, and piggy banks score a win when personalized, but what if you're broke and looking at $25? You can't welcome a special bundle of joy with a ho-hum gift that will gather dust or stay unused for years.

Lovely Baby Shower Gifts That Won't Cost You

Don't despair. There are baby shower gifts below $20 that won't have you losing face when the mom-to-be opens the colorful package. Here are some creative baby shower gifts you'll be happy to give:

* Beautiful and personalized burp cloths
* Gift sets with T-shirts, tank tops, pants, bib, cap and booties
* Charming keepsake boxes
* World's Greatest Mommy things (e.g. cheese grater)
* Personalized baby mugs
* Four-piece gift sets
* Personalized baby pacifiers

Baby travel items make for creative baby shower gifts - rubber duckies, disposable wash cloths, infant toiletry, and some goodies for the mom. Don't forget to tuck in some pain relievers for both mom and dad; they'll need these while on the road. You may want to try out those sick baby items that include a baby thermometer. This will be greeted with sighs of relief because moms-to-be often forget these essential items.

The Mommy/Daddy Agenda

Don't get it wrong. Baby showers are also the time to pamper the moms-to-be. So if you are stumped with what to give for a baby who has yet to make an appearance, focus on the mom and dad. They'll lap up all the attention you'll shower on them with practical items like nifty bottle openers, key chains, votive candle holders, and scented bath oils.

Also, creative baby shower gifts do not mean you'll have to get stuck with so-so items that have been used to death, or the usual baby shower gifts that are beyond your budget. Baby shower gifts under $25 can save you sleepless nights. So get up and go creative. Spoil mom and dad and the baby, too.

Chinese influences on Islamic pottery

Earliest exchanges

Early contacts with Central Asia

Eastern Zhou vase, thought to incorporate Western influences (3rd-4th century BCE).

Despite the distances involved, there is evidence of some contact between eastern and southwestern Asia from antiquity. Some very early Western influence on Chinese pottery seems to appear from the 3rd-4th century BCE. An Eastern Zhou red earthenware bowl, decorated with slip and inlaid with glass paste, and now in the British Museum, is thought to have imitated metallic vessels, possibly of foreign origin. Foreign influence especially is thought to have encouraged the Eastern Zhou interest in glass decorations.

Middle image: Earthenware jar with Central Asian face, Northern Qi 550-577.

Right image: Northern Qi earthenware with multicultural (Egyptian, Greek, Eurasian) motifs, 550-577.

Contacts between China and Central Asia were formally opened from the 2nd to 1st century BCE through the Silk Road. In the following centuries, a great cultural influx benefited China, embodied by the appearance in China of foreign art, new ideas and religions (especially Buddhism), and new lifestyles. Artistic influences combined a multiplicity of cultures which had intermixed along the Silk Road, especially Hellenistic, Egyptian, Indian and Central Asian cultures, displaying a strong cosmopolitanism.

Such mixed influences are especially visible in the earthenwares of Northern China in the 6th century, such as those of the Northern Qi (550-577) or the Northern Zhou (557-581). In that period, high quality high-fired earthenware starts to appear, called the "jeweled type", which incorporates lotuses from Buddhist art, as well as elements of Sasanian designs such as pearl roundels, lion masks or musicians and dancers. The best of these ceramics use bluish green, yellow or olive glazes.

China and the Islamic world

Tang Dynasty earthenware fragment with sancai glaze, end of 7th-early 8th century, excavated in Nishapur, Iran.

Direct contacts between the Muslim and Chinese worlds were marked by the Battle of Talas in 751 in Central Asia. Muslim communities are known to have been present in China as early as the 8th century CE, especially in commercial harbours such as Canton and Hangzhou.

From the 9th century onwards, Islamic merchants started to import Chinese ceramics, which were at the core of the Indian Ocean luxury trade at that time. These exotic objects were cherished in the Islamic world and also became an inspiration for local potters.

Archaeological finds of Chinese pottery in the Middle East go back to the 8th century, starting with Chinese pottery of the Tang period (618-907). Remains of Tang period (618-907) ceramics have been found in Samarra and Ctesiphon in present-day Iraq, as well as in Nishapur in present-day Iran. These include porcelaneous white wares from Northern Chinese kilns, celadon-glazed stoneware originating in the Yue kilns of Northern Zhejiang, and the splashed stoneware of Changsha kilns in Hunan Province.

Chinese pottery was the object of gift-making in Islamic lands: the Islamic writer Muhammad Ibn-al-Husain-Bahaki wrote in 1059 that Ali Ibn Isa, the governor of Khurasan, presented Harun al-Rashid, the Caliph, twenty pieces of Chinese imperial porcelain, the like of which had never been at a caliph's court before, in addition to 2,000 other pieces of porcelain".

Evolution

Yue ware

Further information: Yue ware

Tang Dynasty stoneware with celadon glaze (Yue ware), found in Samarra, Iraq.

Yue ware originated in the Yue kilns of Northern Zhejiang, in the site of Jiyuan near Shaoxing, anciently called "Yuezhou" (). its names goes back to the Yue (state) of the Spring and Autumn period (770-476 BCE). Yue ware was first manufactured from the 2nd century CE, when it consisted in some very precise imitations of bronze vessels, many of which were found in tombs of the Nanjing region. After this initial phase, Yue ware evolved progressively into true ceramic form, and became a true medium of artistic expression. Production in Jiyuan stopped in the 6th century, but expanded to various areas of Zhejiang, especially around the shores of Shanglinhu in Yuyaoxian.

Yue ware was highly valued, and was used as tribute for the imperial court in northern China in the 9th century. Significantly, it was also used in China's most revered Famen Temple in Shaanxi Province. Yue ware was exported to the Middle East early on, and shards of Yue ware have been excavated in Samarra, Iraq, in an early example of Chinese influences on Islamic pottery, as well as to East Asia and South Asia as well as East Africa from the 8th to the 11th century.

Sancai ware

Tang sancai vase displaying Central Asian and Persian influence. 8-9th century. Guimet Museum.

Tang period earthenware shards with low-fired polychrome three-color sancai glazes from the 9th century were exported to Middle-Eastern countries such as Iraq and Egypt, and have been excavated in Samarra in present-day Iraq and in Nishapur in present-day Iran. These Chinese styles were soon adopted for local Middle-Eastern manufactures. Copies were made by Iraqi craftsmen as soon as the 9th century CE.

In order to imitate Chinese Sancai, lead glazes were used on top of vessels coated with white slip and a colorless glaze. The coloured lead glazes were then splashed on the surface, where they spread and mixed, according to the slipware technique.

Shapes were also imitated, such as the lobed dishes found in Chinese Tang ceramics and silverware which were reproduced in Iraq during the 9-10th century.

Conversely, numerous Central Asian and Persian influences were at work in the designs of Chinese sancai wares: pictures of Central Asian mounted warriors, scenes representing Central Asian musicians, vases in the shape of Middle-Eastern ewers.

White ware

Islamic pottery with turquoise glaze and fish motif, in imitation of Chinese celadon ware, probably Iran, 14th century.

Soon after the sancai period, Chinese white ware ceramics also found their way to the Islamic world, and were immediately reproduced. The Chinese white ware was actually porcelain, invented in the 9th century, and used kaolin and high-temperature firing, but Islamic workshops were unable to duplicate its manufacture. Instead, they manufactured fine earthenware bowls with the desired shape, and covered them with a white glaze rendered opaque by the addition of tin, an early example of tin-glazing. The Chinese shapes were also reproduced, seemingly to pass for China-made wares.

In the 12th century, Islamic manufacturers further developed stone-paste techniques in order to obtain hard bodies approximating the hardness obtained by Chinese porcelain. This technique was used until the 18th century, when the Europeans discovered the Chinese technique for high-firing porcelain clays.

Celadon ware

The Chinese fashion for turquoise, or celadon, ware was also transmitted to the Islamic world, where it gave rise to productions using turquoise glazing and fish motifs identical to the ones used in China.

Blue and white ware

Right image: Stone-paste dish with grape design, Iznik, Turkey, 1550-70. British Museum.

The technique of cobalt blue decorations on white background seems to have been invented in the Middle East in the 9th century through decorative experimentation on white ware. Cobalt blue used in this type of porcelain was imported as a raw material to China from mines in central Iran from the 9th century and the technique was fully transmitted to China in the 14th century. On some occasions, Chinese blue and white wares also incorporated Islamic designs, as in the case of some Mamluk brass works which were converted into blue and white Chinese porcelain designs. Chinese blue and white ware then became extremely popular in the Middle East, where both Islamic types and Chinese types coexisted.

From the 13th century, Chinese pictorial designs, such as flying cranes, dragons and lotus flowers also started to appear in the ceramic productions of the Near East, especially in Syria and Egypt.

An example of reverse influence, with the adoption of an Islamic design in Chinese porcelain.

Chinese porcelain of the 14th or 15th century was transmitted to the Middle East and the Near East, and especially to the Ottoman Empire either through gifts or through war booty. Chinese designs were extremely influential with the pottery manufacturers at Iznik, Turkey. The Ming "grape" design in particular was highly popular and was extensively reproduced under the Ottoman Empire.

Brother 7 - Half Term Report Part One

Big Brother is entering the half-way stage so here is a round-up of four of the nine established characters and how they fair in the betting market.

Pete
Current Odds: 1/2

Pete has remained the undisputed favourite to win Big Brother ever since he fell down the stairs to mark his entrance. His odds-on status is justified since he appears to be the nicest and most genuine person incarcerated in the house and he has proved there is more to him than his Tourette's outbusts and nervous ticks. Pete is the unlikely romeo of the house, with Lea, Lisa and Nikki all falling for his unique charms although he claims not to be interested in any of them. At the halfway point, it is difficult to see past Pete as the winner of Big Brother, since the producers love a "journey" and a slushy story about Pete "being accepted for who he is" is being played out right now. It's all predictable and contrived, but it's what mainstream television is all about, right?

Nikki
Current Odds: 11/2

Even though Pete is the likely winner, Nikki has been the best ever contestant on Big Brother bar none. Do people like her really exist and if so, how on earth do they survive in the wider world? Nikki is 24, but behaves like someone well short of hitting even their teenage years. Everything upsets her. She cries when she's nominated, she cried when her fellow housemates had to wash her for a task and she cried when she couldn't get her MP3 player to work. However, her constant grizzling is amusing rather than annoying and her Diary Room monologues have become compulsive viewing. Remarkably, she's knocking out these TV gems seven nights a week on the highlights show. Nikki survived three successive eviction nights which will give the other housemates reason not to nominate her so often. Nikki and Pete in the final two - no question.

Glyn
Current Odds: 9/1

After a few weeks lurking in the background, Glyn has emerged as a strong contender to win the show. He's awkward, lacks social skills, can't take his drink and fancies the pants off any woman in the same room as him. Much the same as any other teenage boy, then. Glyn is seen as harmless by the other housemates and is funny without meaning to be, which is why he has received just one nomination in five weeks. Glyn's lusting after "older women" Lea and Suzie is quite entertaining, while he also said there weren't women like Aisleyne in Blaenau Ffestiniog. Lucky boy.

Mikey
Current Odds: 14/1

Mikey has done very little in almost 50 days in the Big Brother house apart from talk about "biiiiiiirds" and who fancies who. There is very little to his character apart from looking a bit like Vernon Kay and trying to get off with Imogen now Grace has been evicted. However, he was the only housemate that tried to help paralytic Glyn after one drink too many. Mikey doesn't really do anything to offend anyone else so he could well make it until the final day.

Last night we caught up with Stepf McMichael as she headed to the Crystal Club in London with her new boyfriend (?) in tow. Big Brother Stars Snapped Up By The BBC…

Reality TV stars Luke and Bex are celebrating after being given the opportunity of a lifetime. The former Big Brother housemates have been lined up to host a BBC concert for this year’s Children In Need, which takes place in November. BBC insiders predict this could be the beginning of something big as it’s the first time any BB stars have been given the chance to host a live show…

“They’re naturals in front of the camera and they have amazing chemistry. It is in at the deep end. There will be no room for mistakes. They’ll have to be right on the money, but if they pull it off it could land them a mega TV deal.”

Mario Marconi Is Caught Cheating On Lisa…

Sleazy reality TV star Mario Marconi (née Shaun Astbury) was caught cheating on his long-term girlfriend Lisa Appleton just hours before he proposed to her live on camera in the Big Brother house.

CCTV images have emerged of Mario kissing a blonde woman in a hotel bar, just a few hours before he headed to the Big Brother studios in Elstree to declare his love for Lisa. Mario met the woman in question, Victoria Anderson, whilst she was enjoying a drink in the Premiere Inn bar *sniggers* with her boyfriend. When Victoria’s fella nipped outside for a cigarette, Mario swooped in on the girl and was caught kissing her on camera. Moments later, hotel security images show the couple entering the lift and heading toward Mario’s hotel room. The pair didn’t emerge from the boudoir for nearly five hours.

Mario has since admitted kissing the girl, but denied doing anything else, claiming she had “set him up”. Yes, yes of course, we’re sure it was all perfectly innocent. We wouldn’t be surprised if they just sat in that room playing scrabble, talking about politics and the precarious state of the UK’s economy. Yes, that sounds feasible…
