When first starting out in the field, there are a few important choices you need to make. What type of photographs are you going to shoot? Who are your clients going to be? Answering these questions are the first steps to running a successful business.

What type of photography are your going to shoot?

There are two basic types of photographers out there, assignment photographers and stock photographers. When a photographer has clients that demand their presence, they are typically an assignment photographer. Assignment photographers work on various projects such as school events, including class photos, prom and dance pictures, and graduation pictures.

Other jobs usually done by assignment photographers include weddings, portrait photos, and product photography. Stock photographers usually go after the perfect picture of any given subject matter. These subject matters can be of literally anything. They take photos in hopes of a prospective client paying them for rights to the photograph. Unused or images not purchased by a client are typically then sold at a low "stock photo" rate to increase earnings.

Do I need a Business Plan?

After you have decided which type of photography fits you best, it is now time to look into constructing a proper business plan. Many photographers do not feel a need for a business plan, but this is your map to success. A properly created business plan is important in securing financial backing for cameras, film, development tools, and even website creation to display your portfolio. A business plan will also outline the key objectives of your business so you stay on track and attain the goals you set.

Other important points.

Insurance is another critical step when successfully starting a photography business. If you do not have adequate insurance and there happens to be an accident, you will be personally liable for damages and injuries. Take for example you have a physical studio in which you take pictures. If a client were to simply fall off a platform which their pictures are being taken and sustain an injury, your insurance would cover all damages and injuries. Not having insurance in this situation could literally put you out of business. Not to mention, if you run a home based studio, your home could be at risk if you were sued by a customer.

What about marketing? How will I find clients?

Finding the proper ways to marketing your aspiring photography business is also important. Find what niche you plan to excel in. For example, if you plan on taking pictures of nature, know who your target market is. This would usually include calendar companies, nature book and magazine publishers, even textbook companies. Make it a point to meet with the important figures you would deal with inside these agencies. Put your name out there. Offer them samples of your work, and make sure they know how much you would love to add them to your portfolio of clients. Extending yourself to the proper entities which you will sell your photography to is a main concept to running a successful photography business.
